I guess this'll be my build thread about my new Willys. It's a 1946 CJ2A complete with the "Go Devil" flathead 4 cylinder and all original. Tomorrow begint he first step of seeing what will need to be done and ID'ing some of the wierd parts on it... stay tuned as this one has me excited :D :D

Here are the first pics... more will follow 8)

Image

The thing starts beautifully with minimal cranking and feels like it would cruise at 35-40mph all day. Doesn't seem bad considering (best guess) it's been sitting for 5 years or so ... the thing hasn't been tagged since 1997

Some questions that need to be answered thus far:

1. Where did the windshield come from? It's not from a 2A. Looks like a 3A windshield to me (notice bottom wiper mounts and single glass)

2. There's a rear swingaway spare mount and Jerry can holder... I can't find anything like it in any pictures. I'll get more pics up later... I need to figure out if it was a homebuilt thing or some option I've never seen.

Looks to be in great shape! You mentioned paint in another thread, I wouldn't paint it, the patina looks great on it. Get all the mechanicals up to date and running great and then have fun. Repainting would be almost like taking some of the history away from it.

For some reason I was thinking I saw you bought two of these. Did I dream that?

Congrats. There is one that I pass on the way to work, in the country (so nobody sees it) for I think 900 OBO. I'd probably buy it and store it if I didn't think my wife would deball me for it...

It was true... there were two. The second was sold just after I bought it. This was the better of the two and the one I wanted to keep.

The plan, thus far, is to restore it... nothing close to a factory restoration though. Anything missing will be replaced. Rust spots will be repaired. Turn signals and brake lights will be added. It does need a new coat of paint and some rustproofing done. My end goal for this whole thing is really to just have a rig so I can wheel a piece of history on easy and moderate trails in Moab.
:D

Spent the day going through the Jeep ID'ing things and checking what kind of work needs to be done...

The swing out tire carrier... not an original piece but someone did a very good job of building it.
Image

It's going to be cleaned up along with the rest of the Jeep
Image

You can see where they reinforced the corners when they installed the rear rack.

"Go Devil" Flathead 4 cylinder engine... a tire-roasting 60hp! 8)

The second shot also shows the only hole that's een cut in the Jeep by the previous owner... a heater was installed and passed through the cutout on the passenger side firewall. I also need to figure out an air cleaner of some sort

A couple more...

Intact headlights and bezels... also going to keep the tow bar on there so it can follow the KJ to Moab.

Image

Has the stamped "Willys" on both the hood and tailgate... I like those ones a lot more than the plain versions...

Image

No pics of this just yet, but this 2A also has the 2 indentations where a shovel and axe were mounted to the passenger side of the body. These are only supposed to be on the military jeeps. It's possible that mine could be one of the early civilian models that used some leftover army parts... it'll be interesting to start running some numbers...
