Well now the Jeep HAS to get done... just signed up for the Relic Run in Utah July 8-12.

"Relic Run 2010 will explore Utah's highest and most rugged range, the Uinta Mountains. The group will begin the trip in Kamas, Utah on Thursday July 8th and return to modern day on Monday July 12th. During the Relic Run, participants are required to adhere to the "70's and older only" rule. Vehicles, camping equipment, clothing and other gear should be 70's vintage or based solely on technology, materials, and knowledge available in the 70's."

Need to get this thing in working order :5SHOTS:

Alright!!! Progress!!

Pulled off the oil pan to see if there's a simple fix to my 5psi oil pressure at idle (minimum acceptable per FSM)... found about 1/2" of goop in the bottom... no big deal. Opened up the oil pickup and found what looked like pieces of shop rag and remnants of some rubber bits. All that got cleaned out and reinstalled with new gaskets... now we have 20psi cold idle pressure and 10psi warm idle pressure.... booya

Also replaced the points, condenser, coil, and rotor.... things are running better than ever... might just be a tune-up away from a streetable 2A!

I hate to say this, but it doesn't surprise me that you found gunk like that in there. Especially considering the great "mechanic" that had it before you :juggle:

Well I got tired of trying to make the engine run well and decided to tackle another project. I needed a way to mount my new seats... proved to be a rather involved thing the try and do well. After some time with the bender and welder I can up with something that I think will work until I can refinish the original seats...

Both seats mounted w/o the covers... plus my new center console.
Image

You can't see the center support in this pic.... but you can see the awesome rotten tool bin that will need to be replaced... and the awesomeness of the superstrut
Image

Hopefully tomorrow I can get the finishing touches done on the seat mounts and try to get them painted. Then it's back to the engine.... yahoo

Booya!

Knocked out a big piece of the puzzle today... got the little tank running well and went for my first drive of any real length (2-3 miles)... I think the distributor shaft bushing needs to be replaced though... it makes a lot of racket (almost sounds like a rod bearing, but I can feel it in the distributor cap)

Installed a new alternator after the old one tested poo... turned out the old one wasn't installed or wired correctly.
Image

The previous owner also fried the original ammeter when they hooked it up to the new 12V alternator so I replaced that gauge with a voltmeter. Still need to fix speedometer and install a new temperature gauge...

Got a couple things done today and one new project got started....

Fabbed up a timing peephole cover out of some aluminum scrap...
Image

Found a spring at Lowe's that works beautifully to replace my worn throttle return spring...
Image

Then I felt like having some fun with the project... I poked around online and found some old army pics of the "deep water fording" package they used to put on the Jeeps... so I thought I'd start making my own.

My motivation
Image
Image

Here's where I got with it today until I ran out of daylight...

Under the hood I used the factory carb horn and 2" tubing. Still have to install a fitting for the crankcase breather.
Image

This hole in the firewall was put there by a previous owner to run a heater into the cab. I thought I'd put it to better use.
Image

Adapter plate made to cover hole in firewall... similar plate on other side will bolt together using factory holes. I'm going to re-mount the VIN tag on this plate just below the intake tube.
Image

Routing out to the windshield...
Image

From the front...
Image

A quick-coupling will be used to extend tubing to the top of the windshield when it's up... that way I can shorten it when the window's down... little air cleaner added just cuz it was sitting around.
Image

From the front...
Image

Lots of work still to be done with this thing... the purists might hate it but I think it'll be sweet when it's done. Plus I'm doing the whole thing without cutting anything

A little bit more work got done... the rain kept me stuck inside today

Interior bolted down... found out my new tire size won't fit on the rear rack (grrrr)... the bed is the only place it'll fit. Going to have to make a mount for it.
Image

My fenders also have the factory mounting holes for the military spotlights... I tried out some that I had sitting around and they're just a touch too big and interfere with the hood latch. Some Hella 500's should fit just fine...
Image

It's slowly becoming a real vehicle... hooray

Got some mroe work done yesterday.... more work done on the snorkel and the extended exhaust is starting to take shape in the back. Also got an original rear view mirror and an old school turn signal switch from someone online that should work pretty well.

Still waiting on the NOS temperature gauge... :ALONE:

Got some more work done today.... feeling lazy though and decided it's beer thirty :)

Check the new cargo rack... not quite done with it though. Loving the way it turned out though. You can also see where the extended exhaust will be coming out. A brace from the rack will support the exhaust. No new holes will be cut for the rack install... the whole thing is going to clamp itself to the inner lip of the tub. Booya.
Image

Also got the snorkel mocked up. No, the spray can lid is not permanent. Just need to find a good top for it.
Image

More of the snorkel and my fancy new rear-view mirror. Exhaust is just mocked up to see the height.... actual exhaust is much smaller.
Image

Broke down and got some turn signals :( .... plus you can see where the snorkel routes under the dash. It mounts in the factory data plate holes and the data plate mounts right on top in its factory location.
