I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!!

I finally did it.... the JK goes in for a re gear next Thursday, the 21st. I'm going from the crappy stock 3.21 gears to Yukon 4.56 gears, new front carrier and bearing kits. A very reputable 4x4 shop here in Phoenix is doing the install... $1,200 out the door.

Hmmm... I wonder if I can convince Beth that the JK needs the Rubicon 4:1 transfer case??

I can't wait!! :pepper:

What shop did you go to, if you don't mind me asking?

And congrats! I have overheard you muttering about those awful gears more than once :jester:

What JK comes with 3.21 gearing!!??

Mine came with 4.10s and it is going in the shop tomorrow for 5.13s. These things are dogs even with stock gears and tires.

Manual JKs (non-rubi) come with 3.21. Auto JKs (non-rubi) come with 3.73. All rubis come with 4.10.

Used to be in early 2007 if you got the "towing package" you could get 4.10s in a Sahara at least, and I think in an X as well. They did away with that about halfway thru the model year.

Yes, the 6-speed with 3.21 gears is a real slug and an embarrassment. My KJ is better geared with 3.73. I've been tossing around what gears... 4.56 or 4.88. It's a tough call. There's a lot of highway driving out here so I'm leaning towards 4.56 as a good compromise for trail and highway.

I'm riding on 33" M/T's with a 2" lift and have no desire to go bigger or higher. I'm just tired of stalling on the trail every time a rock twice the size of a softball jumps out in front of me and riding the clutch, or stalling on the slightest hill, even in 1st gear 4low.

Currently my RPM is running right at 2,200 rpm or so at 70mph. Using the gear chart below, the 4.56 are a step above recommended gearing, and I'll be turning 2,731rpm with 4.56 gears. I think 4.88 gears might be a tad high at 70mph.

I have until next Thursday to decide what gears.

Opinions.... 4.56 or 4.88??

With 33s I wouldn't go higher than the 4.56 if you plan to be on road much. That should be plenty of gear with the manual. As you know, the other half of that chart looks a lot different for the auto trans. On 35's I was going back and forth between 5.13 and 5.38. The gear and axle shop said if I'm sticking with 35s the 5.13 is plenty. Good enough for me. If it was a trailer queen I'd suggest going higher (or lower as the case may be) but not for a DD.

Yeah, a lot of difference between the auto and stick!! I think i would go with the 5.38 gears if you do any wheeling at all. According to the chart, it's still in the green unlike the 4.56 with the stick which is in the blue.

Here's the chart for the JK auto....

With the stock 32" tires and 4.10s I started in the yellow. 5.13s puts me well in to the green so this will actually be better than stock. I don't want to be hating life on the highway...and I drive at least 40 miles a day at 80 mph. I think the 5.13s will fit my needs pretty well. Plus, there are some concerns about the quality of 5.38s on the market right now...guys have been breaking them.
