Test drove another Wrangler today. A 97. Liked it very much, except for the fact that it popped out of 4wd. It would go into 4 hi and stay in for a bit, then seem to slip out. In 4 lo, it would immediately pop out. Going into 4 lo, it acted like I couldn't quit pull the handle far enough to fully engage. Just enough, then pop right out. Anyone know what might cause this? I tried the search, but didn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks in advance.

Nope. Appeared to be completely stock.

id suspect the transfer case linkage is worn or out of adjustment. If it had been lifted or the transfer case had been lowered i'd guess it needed to be adjusted from moving the transfer case down.

If I'm googling the right thing, which I believe I am, it appears to be a pretty easy fix. And not too expensive. What do you think?

I had the same problem at ECS last year, for a while i just borrowed a bungee from bugnout and hooked it up so it wouldn't pop out, then after getting hung on some rocks and bouncing it a little it started working fine! lol so try getting it hung on some rocks...

Normally This happens with lifted jeeps. Had same problem on my TJ after I lifted. Get under vehicle and locate the shifter linkage from the tub to transmission. It will have a section that can be adjusted with a flat head set screw. Simple as that.
