Hey all, trying to help out a friend with something. He just picked up a 1984 DJ5M for dirt cheap. It needs a little work but nothing too pressing. The biggest issue at the moment is that it loses compression during hill climbs. I haven't had a chance to drive it myself yet, but my friend seems to think it's the head gasket (there is some leaking). Any other thoughts? I was thinking piston rings as well.

Edit: I should add that it's an AMC 150 straight 4

It's got a carb, that's what they do. Something about the float bowl sticking or something like that. It's what swayed me away from getting a 4.2 YJ when I had gotten my YJ.

There could be an underlying problem though as well. Ask over on jeepforum.com. they always help me over there

Yes it's the bowl on the carb. Had same problem with my buggy. Get a carb off road kit and it will solve it. All it is really is a heavier bowl spring.

Good luck with your DJ5M. I'd like to find one and convert to 4wd. I'm a bit partial to the "mail Jeeps" my dad retired with 38 years of Postal service, his brother is also a retired Postal worker; and I have almost five years in...
