I recently bought a 1997 TJ and i want to put a 2" suspension lift on it. However when I when i was talking to one of my Dads friends who is a Mechanic at the local ford dealership he said that to put in a suspension lift you would have to cut and weld on new parts and would take about 10 hours. Now I know pretty much nothing about the subject but that didn't sound right to me. SO i was wondering if anyone could tell me what exactly is involved in lifting a TJ.

I think it pretty much all stock except the tires which are 30x9.5

Thanks

Jeeper4life lfted his re '97 TJ not too long ago. You might PM him, as I haven't seen him post on here for a while.

Here's his build thread, which might answer a few questions for you too:

Good luck!

Nice looking TJ you got there.
Definitely read that thread.
Most mild suspension lifts are just remove and replace as far as labor.

No welding for a 2" lift. I'm not sure what's involved with a long arm upgrade.

For a 2" suspension lift its as simple as remove the old coils and shocks and replace, extremely easy to do on a wrangler. Cutting and welding is involved with long arm lifts

Thank you for the help, I thought it was just switching them over but I wanted to double check.

Remember to get it aligned when you are done. You will also need to extend the bump stops. I don't think with only a 2" lift you will have to deal with the track bars. Probably going to have to change the shocks to ones that are a little longer.

Thank you i didn't know about getting an alignment afterwards. I'm looking at the Old man emu kit which come with everything that is needed. From what I've read they're kits are pretty good.

Old Man Emu has a great reputation. Lots of members run OME products including myself.
I had a buddy who had an OME lift on his JKU.

OME is good stuff, I'm sure you will be happy with it. You may be able to align it and center the steering yourself once your lift is on. On a TJ the lift increases your toe in and will move your steering wheel position off of center. Pix when you are done.

I replied to your PM, sorry it took so long. Lifting a TJ is pretty dang easy, I have installed lifts on an XJ and a YJ and the TJ has by far been the easiest. You don't need a coil spring compressor if anyone has told you do. Like i said, undo those sway bar links, remove the shocks, Jack up one end of the axle as far as it will go, remove the spring on the other end, do then the do the same for the other side. the fronts have a coil spring retainer, at least my 97 did, Just a bolt that holds a bracket to help jeep the coil spring seated. but its pretty much the same deal.
