So I've been hankering for an older Jeep to accompany my KJ, preferably a YJ. So I look in all the usually used car ad places for my area (Michigan), and holy crap!

2000 TJ 85k miles $6500
2001 TJ 114K miles $6900
02 TJ 165k miles $8500
04 TJ 111k -$8900
90 YJ 350 swap -unknown mileage $4500
95 YJ 350 swap -unk miles $6500
90 YJ 130k $4350
98 YJ $4000
95 YJ painted like a neon clown car 150k miles $4000
89 YJ 115k $4250

Comparing asking (and selling prices) to valuation sites like Edmunds or KBB, these all seem high. Do current owners just value their Jeeps more so than everyone else on the planet? I can see an early to mid 2000s TJ in the $6k range - but some of those YJ's asking $4000+ seem nuts.

I get the old saying, it's worth whatever someone will pay- but do people really pay prices similar to that? At this rate, I'm going to have to look for an 88-89 YJ with a million miles or in non-running condition, rusted out and priced at $500 to haul away as a project. Any of those YJ's I've found shouldn't be priced more than $2500- most closer to $2k or less (given the crazy rattle can paint or butchering the owners call "modding". All examples up above were just from my local Craigslist ads. I don't even want to look at dealer used car prices for someone's 20+ year old trade-in.

So what gives?

Generally, wouldn't anything in this price range have modifications? Maybe they're trying to recoup some of that investment, or perhaps ones that are bone stock be asking higher prices because of that?

Could also depend on how far you're willing to travel to buy.

Well, going off of those searches you posted, I'm sure as hell not going to go to Utah to buy one. That first posting you linked in Ohio is a 5 hour drive, each way- not that desperate; and the structural corrosion on that Jeep is awful. Again, all but one of those examples is roughly $4k or more. For a Jeep that should be selling for half of that or less.

I was hoping to get a good running YJ for $1500 or so, preferably not cobbled together by some guy who blew the original engine and did God knows what plopping a GM v8 into it.

Apparently I'm not willing to pay what it takes to play. Perhaps this is similar to what happens in the Mercury Marauder owners arena... they only sell to other Marauder owners/enthusiasts and ask about 2-3x what the vehicle is actually worth... but because they are blinded by their own perceived value vs actual, they gladly pay each other the higher prices.

Jeep models you listed are some of the most sought after vehicles by people wanting to own and mod them!
There are more goodies and accessories available for the Jeeps you seek than any other vehicle on the planet, so demand is very high, and demand drives prices...
You think a used one is bad, go price a new one; no discounts or incentives by dealers, very little off sticker prices, especially the 4 door models....

Thanks, that at least explains some of what I am seeing. It's amazing that a rusted out YJ with 1/8 of a million miles still commands so many thousands of dollars.

a possibility of geographical differences was the main reason for expanding the search as far as possible, but it seems that they are in demand all over. They are by no means the highest priced ones. I limited the search to $5000 and under. The range with the greatest portion of the Jeeps for sale was between $5-12 thousand. Pretty much everywhere.
