I'm thinkin about buying a '93 YJ with a newly rebuilt 4 cylinder engine. It has a 5 speed transmission that needs work. The guy wants $1500. It is driveable. Is the 4 cylinder offroad worhy? Do they have lower gear ratios than 6 cylinder engine powered YJs?

I don't have any 1st hand experience (except as a passenger in one) but I have been amazed at how well the 4cyl. powered YJ's, and other Jeeps for that matter, can wheel. As long as it is in good running condition it should work well. I am not sure on the gearing but you can add lower gears in the diffs or swap in a 4lo setup into the transfer case to help it crawl better. Sounds like an Ok deal.

I thought it was'nt too bad of a deal, since we have 2 other jeeps to drive and this could be our "toy".

My brother has a 2.5L TJ. It wheels just fine. As far as I know all the 4 bangers came with 4.10 gears. They are not speed demons but they do fine. I wanted the 6 clinder just because the MPG between the 4 and 6 is almost nothing and I wanted to tow a trailer. My brother drove his TJ back and forth 60 miles to school everyday and had no trouble with interstate traffic.
