Post subject:  Towing your YJ

Looking for thoughts on flat towing my '90 YJ with the KJ.
Think it's doable?

Powerwise I'm sure you'd be fine, but I'd worry about the towed vehicle not having brakes. I flat-towed my 66 Plymouth (~3500 lbs) behind my 3/4 ton Dodge Ram Diesel without brakes on the towed vehicle and it wanted to push me around a bit, and that truck weighs a good bit more then the KJ.

I'm sure you could do it, just remember SLOW and leave more than enough room to stop. If your towing it very far I would personally get a trailer with trailer brakes and tow it that way, but I know that's a major expense. From my towing history I really like having brakes on what ever I tow if I'm towing more than across town. We even added brakes to a sail boat trailer just to have them for highway use. I believe they make a system for flat towing to active the brakes on the towed vehicle. I'm not sure how much they cost but I believe they work by activing the brake pedel. Check out the link below. It may cost more than a trailer though.

I flat towed my 88 yj from PA to chicago through the mountains @ 60 mph with no problems. Just give yourself plenty of distance for braking.

I would like to trailer it but I think the combined weight would be to much, not sure though.

With your KJ?

Yes, with the KJ.

The yj has 33" mt's. It is more comfortable and safer feeling pulling the yj in my liberty at 60 mph than driving the yj at 60.

Here is a pic of my wife airing down the beast after we towed her to the Badlands.
