My libby has been acting up recently, dead battery a couple mornings...came out today and had a friend help jump it...after taking my foot off the gas, it died! Had power, tried again same...as soon as he unhooked the jumpers, my guages start flickering and jumping...I go to checker to have the altenator checked(battery is new and checked out ok) They can't test it...guy said something about DC being notorious for regulating voltage with the COMPUTER??? Is this guy nuts or do I possibly need a new computer??? And how do I get either of these checked out w/o driving my libby??? I was also unable to retrive OBDII codes. The self test function seemed to work but no codes at the end, just blinking engine light. No codes at all when trying the key activated code thing(one, two, three...on, you know?)...Any suggestions???

(self test; hold odo button and turn ign to on...guages step up, then down, odo counts down and flashes codes, if any at the end...) That "use'ta" work...

The voltage regulator is part of the PCM(many new vehicles are that way),you could have a bad alternator to.Not all problems will throw a check engine light(code),it takes a certian number of times,and/or start cycles to throw a code. You may be in the pending code territory,it needs to have the same problem go wrong a few more times before a code will appear. It happened to me,my speedo stopped working but no check engine light or code till a few start cycles where preformed with the same fault.Testing the alternator os easy, while the engine is running use a voltmeter to check for voltage(big red wire on the alternator and a ground),it should be reading between 13.5-15 volts. If not then the regulator or alternator is bad.Just because the battery is new doesn't mean it's good, you could also have corroded battery terminals,and/or a short somewhere. The BCM may be bad to,depending on the year of your KJ there is a recall(or TSB,can't remember) for bad BCM's also.

Alright, I found a shop in town that could actually test my alternator...how that was a problem in a city as big as Denver is beyond me...It's charging at 10v and they want $250 for a new 160 amp model! Thank god for ebay, new Denso 160 amp alternator, $139.99!

If you need a new one or want to upgrade to 160a from 130a or 136a, this is a great price...check it out
