I was surfing around and found this from startech. seams they HAD a GPS set-up in the Cherokee-KJ in the eupoean markets and was wondering if this was avaliable in the US.

Is this juts a "Hood" for a specific Garmin unit thing or a whole system?

Can any of you guy over the pond chime in on this?

Aside form the one for 1,600+ that is part of the stereo, this is one of the most atractive mounts I have seen and not, obviously, a suction cup mount.

One other question about the "Downloadable" units.

And I think I already know the answer but here goes.

Windows Only?

Any units Mac compatable?

That is a really sweet unit. I am not a fan of units you can't take with you out of the vehicle, but that is nice.

I know the off road trail map system I bought is only compatible with Windows, which sucks because I use a Mac at home, luckily my work computer is where I do all my GPS downloading which is a Windows system. I have yet to come across any Mac map software for my Garmin, but if anyone knows of any, please post.

That looks cool (the Startech display) but it also screams steal me! With a portable unit you will still run the risk of getting broken into (the mount usually says GARMIN right on it). But you can take the GPS out of the car so it won't get stolen... Plus some of the off road ones work well in the water too.

I always keep my GPS out of my jeep unless I know I am going to use. That way it isn't sitting there asking to be stolen. Otherwise it is pretty much there for anyone willing to bust the glass and grab it.

Yup. Me as well. I always take my Nuvi with me and leave it home unless I really need it.

It's good practice to not leave anything in your Jeep... No matter how long or short it sits somewhere.

With the newer street versions (c330,c530, etc) there is no option to record your track info or any way to get the location info (NMEA string) from the GPS. If I had it to do again I would have two choices: a mouse/puck type GPS attached to a laptop

I can use my C330 and hook it up to a laptop using Garmin's free nRoute software. I haven't messed around with it much since I don't have a laptop. It appears to be able to use tracks, routes, etc.

I use a Garmin 660 for highway use, I like it for it's simplicity and accurate maps. Most of the Garmin units use the same maps, so a cheap unit should work as well as a more expensive one. I like the 660 for the street names and turns being announced, to keep my eyes on the road. I also use a TomTom unit that is incorporated into my Treo phone, the TomTom is more customizable than the Garmin, but this also makes it more frustrating when I try find a restaurant or shop nearby. For off road or hiking I like the Garmin ETrex, small and easy to use waypoint's. :)

I use 3 different GPS systems during my travels. First I use a GPS mounted to the windshield very simluar to the Nuvi. It was an X-Mas present to my wife and she doesn't use it so I took it over. Thing is amazing for getting around towns as well as finding stores, hotels, airports etc all over the US. I also carry my laptop with Streets and Trips with the GPS navigation. Laptop is bulky to use but it does come in very handy, I also use it to track routes to cell sites so that others in our company can find them while using their streets and trips. Then my favorite. I have a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. I love this unit. Protable and does everything I need. If it had a bigger screen I would use it as the only GPS. For Jeeping, Hiking and Geo Caching I won't use anything else. I run it with Topo USA on my laptop. Just a good set up all around.
