Just got a Garmin Lengend GPS for Christmas. The unit came bundled with the Topo Map disks. Problem is that when I try to transfer data from the computer to the GPS I keep getting a "can not find com port" error.
The software has an auto srech for the com port, but it can't find it either. Any one have any thoughts on this?

Couple of questions - are you using a serial port on your computer or a USB/serial converter? If you are using an existing serial port then you might need to check to see if there are any conflicts between it and another deivce/port on the computer. If you are using a USB/serial converter you can do the same check for conflicts, then you might have to manually specify the comm port. I have had a Legend before and never had any problems connecting it to my computer for the Mapsource software but I haven't used the Topo before.

also make sure all the serial ports are turned on. most motherboards allow you to turn them off on the bios and since not too many items use them anymore, they are often turned off.

other than that, try the other ports and make sure there are no conflicts (check under device manager)

i use an older version of the mapsource s/w and have no problems connecting to my legend

Are u also running Mapsource or nRoute? When I use either of those they lock out the other so I have to shut down and repower the pc before using the other program. Make sure they are not both trying to run at the same time. Make sure non of ure other programs are using those ports.

If nothing else works try changing the setting on the GPS to "NMEA" output rather than Garmin. IIRC that is what I have to do to transfer stuff from my MAP76 to my laptop.

First I like to thank all that replied...

CORWYN: I'm using the serial on the computer and the serial cable that came with the Garmin Legend. The software seems to want to connect to com 3. When I go into the hardware Devices it state that the com 3 is in use.

Cacher123: I'm just running the Mapsource software that came with the GPS unit. No other programs are running at the time.

Kevh: Really not sure how to check if the serial ports are turned on in BIOS.

I took everything to work and had a coworker connect to his computer there. had no problems at all. The software located com port 1 and made the connection.
At least now I know that the cable, software, and Legend GPS work together. And that the problem exist on my home computer.

Went on-line and got info on how to acccess the computer Bios and checked the serial port "A" and "B" to make sure they were enabled.
They were.
Going into System, I went into the device mangaer as suggested by kevh and corwyyn. opening ports show two listed for Com 2 and one for LPT 1. As I stated early , it seem like the Garmin software wanted to use com3.
After going into communication port proerties, opening port setting and selected advanced. This brought up a list of ports. It showed that com port 1 and 3 were in use.
Going back to one of the com2's, I tried to reassign it to com 3. This brought up a warning that , changing may effect another device.
So nothing ventured nothing gained, I entered OK.
Connected the Garmin legend, ran the software and I"M CONNECTED!!!
Once again Thanks to all you guys/gals that took the time to help me out
Thank you

And now you have also learned a little bit of diagnostics for the future. Comm port conflicts can be a bit tricky to track down, you just need some patience and basic knowledge of what to look for. Glad to hear its working - now you can load your maps into the Legend and go explore!
