GPS with no battery pack

I just recently buoght a Magellan Roadmate 300. It has no battery pack so i really cant remove it from my car. Does anyone know of a battery that you can buy to hook to electronic devices that have no battery and require you plug thm into the cig lighter?

Does it have any kind of external input? Does it plug into a cigarette lighter? if so, how does the wire connect to the unit? Is it removable or hard wired? If removable, what kind of plug/socket is on the unit?

The unit can be plugged into a wall adapter

The adapter is a:
12V output
100-240V

The same goes for the car adapter that pluges into the power outlet in the car. Teh wire plugs into the unit just like any other device that would need a power adapter does. cord with tiny silver cylinder on it-- sorry bad description

Goto Radio Shack or someplace online and get the same pin adaptor that fits the unit.
Go buy a battery pack & recharger for a 12v remote control car. Replace the plug it comes with with the one that fits the Magellan. (or if it needs the plug to mate to the recharger, just tap the pin plug into the wire someplace, extend the wire if u need too) Viola!
I did this as a spare pack for my Garmin V. Works great and the battery pack is small.

This view shows 2 packs attached and run to a plug.

those are both 9.6 V though. That wouldnt work i am assuming. I would need 12 at the most correct?

Most 12v gps work at between around 6 to 14 volts. My garmin V uses 4 AA batteries which is only 6v but plugs directly into the 12v cigarette lighter with no adaptor, just the plug. I'm assuming your's is similar. The 9v packs work fine on mine. I checked the owners man for ures but could find no voltage requirements. I'm sure u can also purchase 12v packs. The easiest way to find out is to buy the plug and wire it to an alkaline 9v battery. If it works, ure set. then u can either use the car packs which will last alot longer or standard 9v batteries.

I would check the manual or some online reference for the proper voltage range for your GPS . . . and get battery packs accordingly.

Just to be sure . . . because your cigarette lighter adapter probably has a resistor (in addition to the fuse) to keep the current down for the GPS. Alternatively, you can always put in a resister (and a fuse might not be a bad idea) inline with your battery packs.... and with that get larger battery packs . . .

He's right on the resistor and the 12v from the car. Would hate to see you kill the gps just to save some money. A voltmeter would tell you the correct volts coming out of that plug in the jeep.
