Now is this type of trip just a site seeing type of thing? For the last few years I been wanting to spend about a month or 2 getting lost in that area.More of a trip that is off the beaten track.I was planning on building a trailer to carry supplies and such, expecting to carry at least 200+ gallons of gas, talking about really off the beaten path.

I'll be driving the jeep so there needs to be some trips off the beaten path. :JEEPIN:

To be honest there is not a whole lot "off the beaten path" sort of stuff you can do via jeep. Airplane sure, but jeep no.

That being said, its still a great trip to make.

Purdhoe bay.....seriously, if you going to drive to alaska you might as well drive all the way north of the arctic circle.

I’ve always wanted to go there since it’s the end terminal for the Pan-American Highway and the only road that reaches the Arctic Ocean.

There are just hundred of miles of road that look like this.....with no side shoots, no "off the beaten path"

The dalton highway is 414 miles, and it has no side shoots to explore. Basically the only path is also "off the beaten" path sort of thing.

Sam, how much of the "highway" is gravel to Prudhoe Bay?

Maybe 65%? There are paved and un paved sections. And just because its paved does not mean its any better than the unpaved.

Sam, those pics are awesome! Is there gas and diesel at all fueling stations? This might be a good excuse for me to install an auxiliary fuel tank on my truck. I’ve been looking at a 30 gallon toolbox and fuel tank combo. That would give me about 64 gallons total.

Yes gas and diesel(arctic non low sulfur diesel too in deadhorse). I think the longest distance without filling stations was canada, so if you can make it 300 miles on a tank you ought to have plenty of fuel. We got gas in fairbanks, then coldfoot, then deadhorse, and didn't even have to touch our reserves. We did need them in canada though, northern canada makes wyoming look populated.

That's good to know. My truck is pre 2007 emissions, so I can run the high sulfur diesel with no problems.

I should be able to get close to 400 miles on a tank of fuel when pulling my camper. So if I added the auxiliary tank, I should be able to safely stretch that out to 700 miles.

 Gesh, that's not the place to have a breakdown. And I suppose there's no cell phone coverage for 95% of the trip, eh?

For now, we're just screening to see who might be interested in taking a road trip to Alaska. There might be a group like you who would much rather turn this trip into an off-road expedition. And there might be a group like me that’s more interested in sight seeing, hiking, camping, gold panning, and fishing without having to go too far off-road. In all honesty, there isn’t much time for those of us who plan to reach the arctic circle.

I think it would be fun and rewarding to build an expedition style trailer and hit the backcountry, but I’m saving those types of trips for the western United States (NM, AZ, CA, OR, WA, ID, UT, MT, WY, CO). If we get a large enough group together, I doubt we’ll all want to go the same routes, see the same places and do the same things. I would imagine that we may breakup into groups for a few days at a time and eventually end up together off and on during the journey. Who knows, this trip is still far off, but I’m really excited about going. You could do part of the trip with us and break off, etc. Either way, it might be a good trip to test out your new trailer and tow rig.

Phone coverage in alaska was ok. Northern Canadia only had phone coverage when you came into a small town every 300 miles or so, and it was canadia phone so my US cell would have been roaming, so I couldn't use it.

For anyone doing this trip I would recommend you have a CB around, and you might consider a cell phone booster or external cell phone antenna.

Some phones have a little antenna plug on the back so you can plug in an external antenna, I used to use one with my old motorola phone and it made a pretty big difference in coverage range. Cell phone boosters will have an external antenna and then a powered "repeater", and either plug into a phones antenna port, or just pickup wirelessly, which means all the phones in the vehicle can use the booster.

I'm going to be picking up one of those to keep in my vehicle at all times(and a wifi repeater with a high gain directional antenna for tapping into wifi).
