Ok so this is down the coast at valdez alaska, we went to a local seafood place(with a super cute girl working there), and got some delicious and cheap seafood, then drove down and checked out people fishing for salmon during the salmon run(this is on my list to do next time I go back), there are a bunch of fish processing places in town, so you just have to bring them your catch and they will gut, process, and freeze them for you.....pack em on drive ice or even ship them home for you......sounds cool to me.

There were also tons of bears around, all in all a good side detour.

Here's my advice... don't over-plan it. There's a highway the whole way and it's just like every other highway. I've driven it in bad weather in January, good weather in July, and everything in between. In all the times I've driven that road, I've never taken a gas can of any sort and never had any trouble. At least once, I didn't have a spare tire and was in a lowered truck with a row of subwoofers going behind my seat the whole time. If you are confident that your KJ can make it until its next oil change without a catastrophic failure, it can make it to Alaska. No problem, just go.

My recommendation: drive to Fairbanks via Edmonton, Calgary, Dawson Creek route and plan your assault in Fairbanks. Plan for time spent in Banff on the way up or down, Muncho Lake is worth a overnight, Hot Springs south of Whitehorse are cool, drive the old denali highway, check out Fielding Lake, chill at Chena Hot Springs, drive to Circle, drive to Chicken, Kennicott, McCarthy, Skagway, and Dawson. Ditch the rigs in Homer and hop the coastal ferry for a couple days in the small coastal towns without road access. All awesome stuff and just off the top of my head.


As for backcountry overland travel... not happening. Nothing against Troy or his rig, but it's not made for the wet grass swampy tundra muck that is most of Alaska. Trail runs happen in large groups with 1-2 winches per rig. The only rigs that even stand a chance are very purpose-built and generally sit on 44"+ agro tires with chains. 6x6's are very common with agro tires. Google Alaska moose buggy if you like... and these things get stuck ALL THE TIME.

The common style of rig for running Alaskan trails, and this is what ALL of the trails look like except for a few easy ones here and there:

My wife is sold, she LOVES the hot springs........ :lol: :lol: :lol: She'll spend 3 days just in those areas. :mrgreen:

We have a guidebook to all the hot springs in New Mexico. The book is called “Enchanted Waters.” Some hot springs are touristy; others are undeveloped areas (natural), and there are a few remote hot springs that require hiking (or backpacking) to get to them. It has become a hobby of ours to find hot spring destinations and take a soak.

If you wanted to include Banff in your trip, which I would recommend, I would skip Calgary/Edmonton and drive up through Banff/Jasper area.....much more picturesque.

If you are desperate for phone reception in northern BC, bring your sat phone, otherwise no service except near towns.

I would love to do this trip! I lived in Anchorage as a kid from 1979-1984 (4th - 9th grade) and still have friends that live there that I KIT w/ through facebook.

If I could make it happen it would probably need to be After I get my youngest through college so probably after 2013-14. A driving trip up there, around the interior and back is High on my bucket list.

I’m glad to hear your level of enthusiasm. Do you think you could aim for the summer of 2014? 2014 seems like a doable timeframe for most people. It’s far enough out to allow plenty of time for planning yet soon enough that people wont lose sight.

I've done the ALCAN twice and both times in the winter. 1st trip was Feb 03 and 2nd was Nov 09. Pulled a 30ft TT up with a 7.3 Powerstroke Excursion and 2nd trip towed a 40ft triple axle with a Dodge 3500 dually with 5.9 Cummins.

Traveled with 2 children, wife and yellow lab and we had a blast. All Super 8 hotels on the ALCAN take pets. We traveled about 300-500 miles per day and just took our time.

Get a Mile Post book before going. It is a great tool to have with tons of info.
If towing a trailer make sure you have a stone guard on the trailer or big mud flaps on your vehicle. A radiator screen would be a good idea for summer travel as well. We didn't have rock/stone issues because everything was snow covered, but summer/spring travel will be different.
2 must haves would be money and a mile post.
Stop at the Laird Hot Springs.

I have not gone, but it's still on my list. Our goal is to hike/climb the tallest peak in as many of the 50 states as possible. That's what we've been doing for the last 4 years. So far, we have successfully summited the tallest high-point in 17 states.
