I don't think you can a take a gun across the Canadian border. But I’m glad to see that you’re in for a 2015/2016 trip.
You can take a firearm across the Canadian border as long as you follow the rules. The ones who usually have problems are the ones that don't declare their firearms at the border. You can even apply for a 5 year Canadian Firearms Possesion and Acquisition licence if so inclined.
It is best if you are only bring what are defined by Canadian law as non-restricted firearms. Leave the pistols and rifles with 30 round mags at home.
