Use this thread to list destinations and/or activities that you would like to see and do while driving through Canada and Alaska.

Anyone else have a copy of the Milepost? That's a great reference. I have one here - it's from 2008, but from what I've been told, things don't change too much. It all depends on our routing.

We USED our Milepost heavily. Great source of info!

There is another road you can head up/down between the AL/CAN HWY and the ocean that is more "rustic".

What is this more rustic road that you speak of?

I just picked up a 2012 Alaska MILEPOST today. If there’s anyone who’s serious about going to Alaska in 2014, I can't think of a better guidebook.

You can pretty much get any copy from the last 5-10 years, and it'll still be pretty accurate. From what I'm told, there's not too much that changes up that way.

I'm sure that's true to a point. I did compare the 2011 edition to the 2012 edition. The 2011 featured different photos and contained write-ups on things that the 2012 didn't have and vice versa. I'll agree with Jayme in that there's not enough significant information changes to justify the expense of buying the last 4-5 editions; however, it might be cool if we all owned different editions to compare. I’m sure that by the time that 2014 rolls around, my 2012 will be outdated to a certain degree.

What exactly is the milepost? A mile by mile break down of the Dalton?

In short, it’s a travel planner for Alaska. You are correct in that it’s a mile-by-mile highway log. My 2012 contains 30 major trip routes, 60 side trips and over 100 maps. The book is over an inch thick and features Ferry Travel, RV travel, Motorcycle Travel, etc. There are a lot of write-ups on accommodations, camping, fishing, kayaking, snowboarding, snowmobiling, golfing, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, road conditions, sightseeing, etc. The book also contains route and trip planning for the Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

The MILEPOST is known as the Bible for Alaskan travel. You can learn more here: http://www.milepost.com/

Thanks. If you already have this years I guess I'll wait till the 2013 edition comes out. Then we'll have another one to compare.

lol, I must have posted about the same time that Jayme posted. After submitting my post, I walked away from my computer and came back to see that the post didn't submit. So I resubmitted to learn that Jayme had already replied, nearly with the same response.

cgass, it would be good if you waited another 6 months for the 2013 edition. Like I said, the maps and routes don't change, but the articles, advertisements, write-ups, trip destinations, and other information does change or cycle from edition to edition.

Not a problem. I'll see if I can find any other useful information while I'm in Fairbanks. 35 days till I fly out.

Very cool.

Are you planning to take the KK in 2014?

Yes I am. My brother has agreed to fly in to be my co-pilot as well.

NICE! WILL 3 WEEKS BE DOABLE FOR YOU? AND HOW MUCH TENT CAMPING ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO? IT SEEMS THAT MOST OF US ARE PLANNING TO DO SOME TYPE OF CAMPING (TENT/RV/CAR), SO I’M GOING TO START LOOKING INTO CAMPING AREAS WITH AND WITHOUT AMENITIES (WATER, ELECTRICITY, BATHROOMS, SHOWERS).

3 Weeks shouldn't be a problem for me. I'm also starting from a much closer point than others. I'm sure we'll get into the specifics more as the date gets closer, but I was hoping to meet up with everyone somewhere in BC. There's basically only 2 routes from the continental US to AK so there should be a place where we could all meet.

I'm planning on tent camping every night :CAMPING:

Edit: Just a thought, but if some people are under a time crunch it might be easier to take I-90 to Seattle and then come up from here. It's not as scenic as driving through Canada, but it's probably quicker.

Sarah and I are planning to stay at the Chena hot springs for at least one day. The campground is located approximately 60 miles outside of downtown Fairbanks. I have posted two links below; one giving info about the hot springs and the other link providing info about the campground for those who might be interested.
