We just finished hiking Oklahoma's tallest point called Black Mesa (4,975 ft).

Distance: 8.6 miles round trip

Trail Info: http://www.summitpost.org/black-mesa/151933

In the distance, you can see where the trail wraps upward to the mesa top.

These are dinosaur tracks found nearby. I can give you directions if you are interested.

Nice. I actually did Texas for the second time last Thursday. It was the first time for the family though.

I've got
Texas,
Louisiana
Arkansas
Florida
Oklahoma
Kansas
New Mexico
Arizona
I think Rainier is out if my league.

You're three states up on me. The only state that I've done that you haven't is Missouri.

With a guide and some schooling, it can be done. We'll take a few classes before we attempt it with a guide.

I would like to bag one more peak before winter. Tentatively, we are looking to attempt Mount Elbert (Colorado) on October 10th or 11th weather pending.

Don't be like me and get a late start, 9:30am, and have to turn around 5 hours in due to afternoon thunderstorm. I think most everyone coming down said they started at around 6am. You can camp at several camp areas near the trailhead.

Which trailhead did you take? There are 5 listed:

South Mt. Elbert Trailhead
Echo Canyon Trailhead
Black Cloud Trailhead
South Halfmoon Creek Trailhead
North Mt. Elbert Trailhead

Our plan is to hike the South Mt. Elbert Trail. It starts at the lower trailhead (9,560 feet) and is 11.2 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 4,850 feet. An early start is a must on this mountain, especially since it's not a short hike.

I want to say south but I don't recall. It is the main trail used.

We bagged the tallest peak in Colorado, Mt. Elbert, 14,439’ feet. It was a pretty strenuous hike with over 4,000’ feet of climb and 12 miles of hiking. Thankfully, it was pretty cool when we hiked. It was 40*F when we departed. We spent the next day soaking in the hot springs.

Yes it was! I would post pictures, but Photobucket is now requiring that I pay a monthly fee for third party hosting. Does anyone know of a free place that allows third party hosting?

We're going to attempt a few easy high points in a few of the southern states!

In terms of a free and convenient Photobucket alternative, try postimages.org. WWDiesel found that one, and I'm using it now too. Some others have recommended imgur. The trick will be to update the IMG links in my important old posts.

Thank you! I will try using that! We just summited the high point in Florida, so I'm getting behind on pictures!
