At 19,340 feet, this is honestly one of the easiest non-technical snowcapped backcountry expeditions for this elevation. From the research that I’ve done, the actual time to summit (taking the Marangu route) would involve no more than 4-5 days (weather permitting, experience pending, and altitude acclimatization). I don’t feel comfortable doing this trek without a guide. but I thought it would be neat and affordable if a small group of us wanted to do it. There are several guided outfits to choose from. Some are more luxurious (provide camping gear, a cook, and other amenities). Then there are the guides who simply operate off your time and skill level but you provide your own equipment, etc. I’ve always wanted to summit a 19,000 foot peak and Kilimanjaro would be an easy introductory and memorable summit to do. |

I need to get a small group together or at least a large enough group to qualify for a guided trek. Where's cgass when I need him?

The guide that took us part way up ( day hike) his Grandfather was the guide who took the very first white man to the top. Our guide also did the summit and back down in like 12 hours to raise money one time. To do it right you have to have 5-6 days , even half way up the air gets quite thin |

If I were to make one of these treks, I'd carry a a stepstool up so I could claim to have climed that extra couple of feet higher than anyone else.

Porters will carry it up so take a 8 foot step ladder  You actually carry very little all food / bath room supplies / tents etc are hand carried by the porters. I think its 2 or 3 porters for every person in the party. They even have there own route part of the way up to make it faster and not so crowded on the main trail, which is rough, no paved walkways

a few shots of the trail ( easier part) and also where you stay after the first day Two of the owners of the Safari Company ( Superb Tours and safaris ) and good friends of mine were with us as well pictures are not the best since this is some of the ones that got deleted and then had to be scanned   where you stay for the first night, also turn around point for the day hike  Guy in the back, he was our guide, also was the grandson of the guide who took the first white man ( Hans Myers) to the summit in 1889  Some of the best water I ever tasted, filled up our water bottles right to the left of the falls  Made it after a 9 hour walk

Those are great pics Tom. In your estimation, how much do you think a summit trip would cost including airfare, food, guides, gratuity, etc.? Maybe throw in a two day safari. |

Let me dig out my paperwork I have estimates for various trips and then depends on what kind of places you want to stay. But I can get a high end and low end to start My last trip, airfare alone was 3100 round trip You can get cheaper but some of the airlines are not so good, plus some have a 2-3 day layover where I never have more than 4-5 hours. Also we could fly into the Kilimanjaro Airport which would be a little cheaper, be better than Dar-es-Salaam, plus my Brother In Law works there I'm not sure on what our trip would of cost, we stayed in 5 star hotels, had food when out on safari, all the perks and the owners took care of it. |
