Post subject:  Our quest for Hot Springs

I’ll use this thread to document our trip reports of spas, rural bath houses and remote backcountry thermal pools. The purpose is to share our hot spring destinations and experiences for those of you who love them as much as we do. Even if you’re not interested in making these adventures, you might at least find this thread entertaining.

Trip 1 (Ojo Caliente)
Location: Ojo Caliente, NM

“Our sulphur-free, geothermal mineral waters have flowed from a subterranean volcanic aquifer for thousands of years. Ojo is the only hot springs in the world with four different types of mineral water including lithia, iron, soda and arsenic. Over 100,000 gallons come to the surface, revitalizing those who soak in these legendary, healing waters. Our ten pools are filled with different types and combinations of these waters with temperatures ranging from 80-109 degrees.” http://www.ojospa.com/

Trip Review:

This is not a crowded place during the off season or during the week days. Even though there’s really no off season for hot springs, people are less tolerant of cold weather, thus keeping the pools open. I took these photos the first day I was there and you can see that these pools were vacant. We even got a little snow one night when we were out there.

These hot springs are fantastic. I highly recommend this place for every type of person. There's plenty of hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, and sightseeing nearby. We will most certainly go back!

We filled up in Albuquerque

Here's the entrance to Ojo Caliente

We found our camping spot. They allow tent camping also.

Okay, so this is a resort and spa, but this is also New Mexico, so don't let that fool you. This is a very secluded area. Here's the luxurious part of the resort for those who prefer the finer things in life.

Here's the restaurant for those of you who enjoy the finer foods in life. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but it's a really cool building and atmosphere. We went back to the camper and prepared our own meals.

This wall hanger is actually showing you what the area looked like at one time. There was a pueblo on top of the mesa and the hot springs were down below. Our camper was located about 30 yards from the mountain stream. The hot springs are up against the cliffs.

And here was some of the pots that were found in the area, most date back about 2,000 years ago.

Okay, so moving on to the hot springs.

This hot spring was in a volcanic rock shelter. This would be a great place to go during the winter months because it holds in steam.

I did mention that this was a spa, right?

Ojo Caliente is nice. Have you been to the other hot springs in the Jemez? I have been to a couple over the years, but it has been awhile.

No, I haven't been to the Jemez hot springs, but I've heard that they are really nice. We have them on the list. Let me know if you want to go.

We finally made it down to Faywood Hot Springs. The hot springs is a remote oasis located in a vast desert terrain south of Silver City, NM. I won’t go into great detail, but I will post a few descriptions with pictures.

The RV sites were surprisingly nice. We had electric, water, and sewer hookups with excellent panoramic views. There was an open grill at each site. The covered picnic table was especially convenient for sun protection.

There were numerous pools and each was classified into one of three categories (clothing required, clothing optional and private). Surprisingly, the clothing optional was the most popular. We stayed two nights and always had a pool to ourselves. We didn’t pay extra for the private pools, but we did soak in all the others.

We would like to come back in the fall/winter months and maybe tent camp. I took a few pictures of the camping sites that I liked the best. Now I have a record of where I would like to stay in the event that I want to call ahead and reserve a camping spot. The camping spot below is located approximately 30 feet from the nearest spring.

That looks like a nice spot. I have been to City of Rocks a few times but never went to the hot springs. I will have to check it out the next time I am down there.

You can hike from the campground at Faywood Hot Springs to the City of Rocks. I think it's approximately a 2 mile hike. By doing this, you can bypass the $5.00 City of Rocks entrance fee.

Cool!

We drive through the Silver City area fairly regularly. We'll have to check it out the Faywood Hot Springs some day.
