Outside of Alaska, Mount Whitney is the tallest peak in the United States. It does, however, require a backcountry permit - which means there are limited passes, dates, and trail options. I’m looking at a backpacking approach for three reasons, (1) less technical (2) less crowded (3) better chances of getting a Mount Whitney and backcountry permit.

If you might be interested, please read this link for more information:

When were you thinking? That's not a terribly long drive for me.

It’s a longer drive for you than it is for me. The total distance to Lone Pine Ranger Station from where I live is about 733 miles. I don’t have a set timeframe. When is a good time for you (permit pending)?

The only time I could possibly do it is late August or September, and it would have to be like a Monday through Friday. I can't get weekends off of work right now.

Are you talking 2012? I'm not sure if we could get a permit for this year, but I could call and find out.

Yeah that would be for 2012. If you can't do it until next year I'm much more open. I just need to know by May and I should be able to get whatever I want

Let's shoot for next year. With proper planning we should be able to secure permits on our timeframe. There are so many routes and intersecting trails on this particular summit. Different trails require different permits, so I ordered a guidebook to get a better grasp on the trail conditions, routes, permits, etc. Let me know if you have a trail preference. Once I read the guidebook, I will post up a few trail and date suggestions and we can move from there.

Sounds good to me. I'm leaving for AK in a few days. When I get back we can look into some specifics

For some unknown reason, I accidently ordered two Mount Whitney guide books. I made several online orders that day, so I must have overlooked the double order. Anyway, I will send the book for $15.00 shipped to anyone who wants it. This is the BEST guidebook for Mount Whitney and the most UP-TO-DATE edition. The book is called “THE COMPLETE TRAILHEAD-TO-SUMMITT GUIDE” by Paul Richins, Jr.

The book includes:
- Fifteen routes to the summit (3 new routes in this edition)
- New Chapter on climbing Mount Whitney in winter
- Trail profiles and charts for quick reference
- Trip planner with summaries of all the routes by distance and difficulty
- Filled with exquisite black and white photos
- Beautifully detailed maps cover all routes

This book, hands down, is a must for those who want to summit Mount Whitney.
