Outside of Alaska, Mount Whitney is the tallest peak in the United States. It does, however, require a backcountry permit - which means there are limited passes, dates, and trail options. I’m looking at a backpacking approach for three reasons, (1) less technical (2) less crowded (3) better chances of getting a Mount Whitney and backcountry permit. The only time I could possibly do it is late August or September, and it would have to be like a Monday through Friday. I can't get weekends off of work right now. |

With proper planning we should be able to secure permits on our timeframe. There are so many routes and intersecting trails on this particular summit. Different trails require different permits, so I ordered a guidebook to get a better grasp on the trail conditions, routes, permits, etc. Let me know if you have a trail preference. Once I read the guidebook, I will post up a few trail and date suggestions and we can move from there. |
