Sometime in my life, I would like to make the trip down to South America.

I've dreamed of this too, but the Darian Gap is a logistical nightmare, and near impossible to cross with out an army of locals to clear a way and float you across the many river crossings, and an army of bodyguards to protect you from the drug cartels and kidnappers. It can and has been done but you would need to be well funded. And sadly, last a checked a few months ago, there is no ferry from panama to Columbia to bypass it. The only current option is to ship your jeep on a roll on roll off ship to S. America which is also expensive as you will need to ship it back when you're done. If a ferry ever opens up in the future I would love to do a trip like this.

JeepNCrowd, thanks for taking an interest! I too would like to see the current obstacles become a reality through reasonable solutions. In the meantime, we can dream!

There used to be an outfit in Panama that would help you arrange container shipment of your vehicle around the Darien Gap. Used to talk to the guy that ran it on ExPo a few years back. Almost flew down to volunteer for them until they had to move, and eventually the business went under. I'm sure it's still doable, but the logistical paperwork is probably a nightmare. Definitely a matter of doing your homework first - and talking with some locals might be a good idea - and the knowledgeable folks over at Expedition Portal.
