Progress! Today with the help of my neighbor Tim, we got the wall skeletons up. The Kreg pocket hole jig came in super handy for this project. We also waterproofed the area where the wood contacts the metal using Silicone II weather sealer.

A little more progress today. We have a front wall frame!

Image

The front wall frame went a long way towards stabilizing the side walls. Once the rear wall frame is up, I will be able to cover it with a tarp and not worry about the wind snapping the walls from the wooden foundation on the trailer deck. It looks like I have a few more days without rain in the forecast, so the structure is safe from the elements for now!

Prof and John, thanks for following my trailer build! It is nice to have a cheering section when the going gets tough.

I was working outside this morning, but quit at about 1:30 because it's 95 degrees, humid, and there is an air quality alert outside. When I made a couple of cuts that were 1/2 inch short because I didn't measure the length correctly, I knew I wasn't feeling that great and it was time to pack it in. I might try again after I cool off and the temperature comes down this evening.

This morning I got most of the rear wall braces up, so the side walls are now anchored down nicely.

Absolutely! Thanks for following! :D

This afternoon I framed one of the "benches" that runs along the inside wall of the trailer (passengers side; driver's side will be built tomorrow). The bench frame is both fastened and glued to the side wall plus the foundation, so the side wall skeleton is very solid now. I can shake the whole trailer on its suspension by pulling back and forth on the wall beams. This bodes well for its off-road-worthiness.

Today was a hot but nice day, so I got a lot done. I finished the roof beams so that the tarp would lay better over the trailer when we have a thunderstorm this evening.

Image

I temporarily hooked up my fantastic fan to the converter to ease the heat a bit while I worked. Works well!

Image

I got the tarp on for the night with the help of my neighbor. We joked that almost anything could be hidden under there. A howitzer. A Patriot missile battery. A squad of Army Rangers. ;)

The fantastic fan will make a huge difference in pushing and pulling air. As for solar, you wont need a very large panel if you have one battery. Although, the bigger the panel the better. We have a 160 watt panel on our trailer with a dual battery setup. I'm amazed by how well it keeps the batteries charged, especially after testing them for over a week when boondocking. I was originally going with a 120 watt panel, but realized that the price for a 160 watt panel wasn't that much more. I have deep cycle batteries. You may want to use the golf cart batteries.

That would be fun. I could definitely make use of your expertise on the Solar/DC side of the electrical.

Thanks, Prof! im using select pine boards from the Home Depot. Pinus radiata, which is a California species. It says it is "responsibly harvested." Hope that means sustainably harvested, ha ha.

I have three group 24 marine deep cycle batteries, so I'm looking for a panel in the 220-250 watt range. The batteries are run in parallel, so it is still a 12 volt system. If you know of anyone who wants to get rid of a nice solar module and an MPPT charge controller, just let me know! I've been watiching my local Craigslist.

Not too much to report today. This morning I drilled four additional holes for grade 5 bolts that will hold the center of the side walls to the top of the fenders, and I started the process of water-sealing the gap between the fenders and the wood. It was threatening rain most of the afternoon, so I worked in the shop primarily. I made the long beveled pieces that will fill the V-shaped gaps at the top and bottom of the "windshield" (ront upper wall). I don't have a table saw, so I rigged up a jig to my band saw and cut the boards lengthwise using that. Definitely a challenge, but they came out nice.

Are you planning to mount the solar panel to the roof? With three batteries and a 220 - 250 watt panel, you should be able to supply a lot of power. What will you be using the solar for?

I expect to be doing some weeklong trips without access to shore power for charging, so I wanted to have enough power to keep the fantastic fan and lights on. I would also be charging and running a laptop computer, GPS unit, iPad, and phones. The camper will be for fun but I am also making it to be a base of operations for summer fieldwork in the mountains. I'm insulating the camper so it can be used in the winter too, and in that case, the battery bank would run electric blankets!

You should be in good shape. Our system supported a fantastic fan, interior LED lights, water pump, audio system, and a 12v TV for a week. Plus, we charged cell phones, laptops, etc. The real test will be the winter months when we run the furnace when boondocking. Those furnace blowers draw a lot of power.

With a beefy enough panel, I was thinking the system might be able to run a small air conditioner for a few hours a day. I am looking at the ClimateRight PetCool system that can cool down doghouses, kiosks, and teardrop campers of up to 400 cubic feet in size. It also has a heating element for winter.

[url]http://www.climaterightair.com/products/climateright-2500-btu-mini-ac-heater.html/url]

The cooling draw is 480 watts, and the heating draw is 800 watts. I have a 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter that will help with that. My camper is approximately 8x6x5, or 240 cubic feet, which should be well within the capability of this little machine.
