Post subject:  Speedo fix for using other than the 8.25

I have finally fiqured out the speedo issue for using a non-8.25(or JJ's KJ 44) rear diff and a t-case that can use a mechanical speedo drive.

By now you all know that Ted and myself are using AtlasII t-cases and a D60 and Ford 9" rear ends for our SFA swaps.Well the speedo issue has been kinda a black plague for us,planned on using a TJ electronic speedo drive and then having to wire it up(KJ uses 2 wires and TJ uses 3 wires) all with a speedo signal interface.I have been researching it alot and finally got in contact with Nevada Speedmeter, they are very knowledgeable poeple there and new exactly what the KJ used and a TJ.Well the KJ uses a AC signal generator and the TJ uses a Hall-effect sensor and are not adaptable. They make a little gismo that attaches to a regular mechanical speedo drive(will post part# when I get it,$160) and is the same AC signal generator that the KJ uses(2 wire) but of course I'll still have to adjust the pulses per mile by the Dakota Digital recalibrator(which I already have) to dail it in instead of uses different mechanical gears.Costly little bugger but cheaper then trying to machine stuff in the rear diff to use a tone ring and messing with all of that.

This info might be usefull to any other person wanting to do a SFA swap and not have to worry about keeping the 8.25,finding a South Africa KJ D44,or machining the gears for a tone ring.Though use of the stock KJ t-case can't use this mod.

Thats great, so the total would be the $160 + the cost of the Dakota recalibrator?

Who was it that found the South American Dana 44 for the KJ? I know that's not the answer, but the speedo solution used in that diff might provide parts to make a D44 solution work. Can't recall if that was JJ or ArbSeth.

Dakota unit runs around $80-ish (IIRC)
I have one of the South Amercian KJ D44's and it was supplied through a source at Nth Degree (Now part of AEV). Quinn still has another one left and I believe that allyrand is gonna grab it to upgrade his SFA. It was an expensive housing but it did elminate the speedo problem as mine works great, just about 10 mph off (slow) at about 60 on the speedo.

Seth adapted a Isuzu tone wheel to his D44 but I am not sure if he ever finished hoooking it up so it would work.

It worked just fine. Probably the cheapest and easiest way to go if you're going to run a D44 in the rear. The RD116 is already set for tone wheels for International applications... the sensor didn't care. We drilled the housing, set the depth correctly (took a little doing, but not rocket science) and voila... done deal. I had to do it before I sold it...

And did you tell them that one condition of the sale was that they had to join up here so we could still see that amazing rig you built?

Might it be easier to get a GPS that offers the speedo option as well? Just thinking out loud.....

That won't keep the engine running when you come to a stop, ask ARBSeth about that fun little problem.

It only happened when you railed on the brakes... for the most part it wasn't an issue.

Every now and then though, some jackass would cause a sudden brake situation... bad times! No power brakes and no power steering...and it happened a couple times wheeling... now that wasn't fun at all. First and worst was when I was coming down the backside of Big Bear into the Mojave when we finished it and it went dead on one of those nasty switchbacks while I was wearing in the Vanco's... almost died that time...got used to it after that.

What I got for it is classified, but I took a beating that won't be soon forgotten. Lets just leave it at that...

2-Dodge/Jeep drive gear,short(any tooth count)
3-WoodWard A/C signal generator,part# SA-2650-A
