How well would the axles out of a 96 XJ work? It is a HP Dana 30. I know I've seen people say 97 to 99, so I just wondered if there was an issue with the 96's? It already has a lockright locker in it.

I can also pick up a 8.25 with a detroit locker. It's got drum brakes. is it easier to convert that to disc, or swap out the locker and gears?

My plan is to use this with the RockLizard Kit (if it comes out soon).

Thanks

The front is fine. You will eventually upgrade it to alloys and better u-joints anyway.
You would be way better off using your current 8.25 and regearing due to the speedo pickup issue. Toss an ARB in it and alloys and call it a day.

Thanks for the reply. You mention throwing an ARB in the rear. Any reason I wouldn't use the locker setup in the 8.25 from the 96? It has the locker and 4.56 gears. Can I just swap that into my existing rear axle? (the dana 30 has the 4.56's too)

dana 30 lockers and gears won't fit the 8.25 housing.

Not sure but I don't think the XJ Detroit will be able to accept the tone wheel from the KJ where the ARB does. Check that w/ teh MFG though.....

Ok INC.......Re-read his post.....he is talking about the gears and locker out of the XJ 8.25 going into his KJ 8.25.

I'm pretty sure I can fit the dana 30 gears into the 8.25 with a BFH. LOL that was classical.

Ok. so the 8.25 is a no-go :( that sux. It was a great deal (both axles, 4.56 gears, and both lockers for $800).

Can I use the 8.25 gears in the axle with the ARB or another KJ locker? Or will they be different in the XJ?

do you know the p/r from the DL in the XJ axle, if it is DET1876-179A it would work in your KJ, thats the 29 spline, some of the XJ 8.25 were 29 spline and some are the 27

The reason I recommend 97-99 axles is because 96 was a midyear vehicle where they started making changes to the axles near the end of the year so it's kind of a crapshoot what axles you really get unless you get a build sheet from the exact model of XJ and confirm what is in the axles. in 96, they started the switch from 27 spline to 29 spline axles in the 8.25, and you don't want a 27 spline 8.25. And the front HPd30 they went from 260 UJoints to 297's which are stronger. It isn't real hard to convert these over to the upgrades, but its several extra hundred $ in parts to do so, when you can get the 97-99 axles that already have the upgrades for next to nothing. 2000-01 XJ D30s went to low pinion, so you don't want those either. And all XJ 8.25's had drum brakes, so you would have to convert to discs, but that really isn't too hard if you already have 8.25 or ever ZJ D35 disc brakes.

So what is the difference in how a 96 xj spedo works and how a KJ speedo? myabe I can develop us a converter box. I have access to some pretty good engineers.

Ok. Darn. I wanted to get these axles and have them already built the way I needed with the gearing, lockers, etc. (even had an armor diff cover). Oh well, life goes on. I'll just do it right the first time so I don't have to try to make something work later. Thanks for the help guys. I wanna do the swap this spring so I still have a little time to get what I need together.

You may be able to machine the carrier to accept your tone ring to put the locker in your 8.25. I had to do this with my ARB because I was sent the wrong ARB. As for the spline count, youwould need to find out. But as stated, you would be better served to call the locker manufacturer and ask if there is enough material to machine for the tone ring.

Or if these are the good axles within that year, you could get an atlas and the signal generator and the dakota digital converter....

Thanks. I knew about the atlas swap setup, but I figured if I was going that route, I might as well put tougher axles under there. Didn't make sense to go Atlas Tcase on the D30 and 8.25"

I know it would probably be ok, but if you are going all out, then they fall a little short.
