I was curious to the differences between the vacuum disconnect and the non-vacuum disconnect. What are the differences and which is better? and why?

vacuum, you have a two piece axle that have a sleeve that engages the two on side to to lock it the entire axle...it's a weak point on that type of axle...a regular hpd30 has one solid piece so if it would brake, you can much more easier replace that axle shaft...also you don't have to worry about the axle not engaging or opposite

Can they be rigged to be locked at all times. Might be worth it if it was cheap enough.

You can install a block off plate and regular axles. That is a common fix for them on vehicles that have the disco setup. Still not worth using on a SFA conversion even if free like Troy said.

Point taken  I might get an 84 v6 XJ for free from my friend. I was going to beat it and then pull the axle for a later date. It is most likely a junk axle huh?
