I know long arms are better off road and give way more flex, so why does anyone go with a short arm kit over a long arm one, besides price? Is there any benefit to short over long, besides price?

Short arms would require some insane modifications to be able to be used on a KJ.

I am not using them on mine. But a friend is using them on his TJ and I don't know why he won't go to long arms.

What kind of insane mods would be needed anyway?

On a TJ, short arms just bolt right into the stock location. Anyone with a couple of jacks and some hand tools can install a short arm lift. Long arms require cutting the stock mounts off the frame and usually some welding is involved as well. The major disadvantage to a short arm lift is that the control arms are closer to perpendicular to the ground which ends up transmitting more vibrations straight into the frame rather than allowing the suspension to absorb them. A long arm lift means the control arms are nearer to parallel with the frame which allows the springs and shocks to absorb vibrations better.
