I measured the Maxxis and the MT/R and the MT/R is sitting a hair over 35 and the Maxxis a hair under 34. It won't be an issue for a spare.

I have a question about long arm mounting brackets. I was planning on keeping the rear axle lower mounts and using them. Not ideal but I don't know why they wouldn't work. Any reason why they wont work? I know there are better and stronger mounts out there, but if they work I am going to use them. I ask because I am buying all my brackets and tabs for long arms and coil overs and want to make one purchase and not go back for more later.

Thanks.

Not that I can see. Might wanna put some kinda "skid" on the front of them to keep from tearing one off on the rocks, but I don't see that as being a problem because of how close they are to the tires. If anything, they break and you can have someone fab up some custom mounts. Won't cost that much. If worse comes to worse I could have someone do it here using my heep for specs and mail them to you.

I was thinking the same kind of thing. Use them until I need to replace them. I do need to measure to see if they are the right width for the long arms and I am hoping they are, but I bet they aren't.

I tore up the axle mounts on my KJ pretty bad. I asked the shop to see if they could fix them and skid them for me. They tried to use the Currie min skid that is sold for use on the front axle of the TJ but they didn't quite fit right, so they had to cut some steel and weld it on the reconstructed mounts. This is what I ended up with:

Your talking about the shock mounts right? The pics above are the lower control arm mounts. If it's the lower control arm mounts then personally I'd have someone just cut off the existing front mounts shown in the pics above and fab up some new one's with thick steel. They could also give you more clearance at the mount this way. The factory mounts are really in a bad spot and hang too low.

I am cutting off the mounts that attach to the frame rails of the jeep. I am referring to the mounts on the axle for the lower control arms. The mounts for the unibody have to be moved in order to run long arms, so the stock ones get cut off. I am hoping I can continue to use the axle mounts though. The shock mounts will stay stock and shouldn't need replacing.

Another issue I am having is what direction to take when mounting the front coil overs. I want to do it cheap and easy and mount them with some tabs like these:

Image

But if I do that, then the mounts are obviously going to be on the top of the axle tube and which adds lift height because of the location on the axle tube as well as the coil over being up higher on the mounts.

The front axle I bought has lower control arm mounts with the JKS skids already mounted up and they work well without a doubt.

Image

but then I found these

Image

and these mounts would replace the control mounts on there now and move the control arm mount up the axle tube for extra clearance and make a place for the coil overs to mount that won't add any additional height because of the mount location.

What do you guys think I should do? The small tabs are like $4 each, and the control/coil over mounts are $35 each.

You will probably find that mounting them outboard further (than even those nice brackets are) will help as you need to get the coils a little bit away from the body. as it sits on mine now I have very little clearance between the coils and the inner fenderwell. I haven't noticed that being a problem, just something to think about.

doesn't look like those will put the shock out as far outboard as you will need them to be but wth, i'm usually wrong anyway.

Well I could mount them farther out on the axle tube, to the location you have them JJ, and the angles would help move my control arms back for better angles. The only way to mount them like yours is go custom or buy Nth stuff which is awesome, but ludicrously expensive. I mean even if I mounted tabs as close to the knuckle as I can, they still aren't as far out as yours JJ, are they?

Those are not Nth parts. Custom made, and simple at that, brackets added to the lower control arm mounts that were already on the axle. Only Nth brackets i have are all on the rear diff.

I'll check into doing that myself. Everything I look at moves the lower coil mount too high or too far inside on the axle tube. :?

Thanks JJ.

I know a few guys using Ballistic Fab for their long arms mounts and they swear by them. I got the rear axle truss and frame stiffeners from Clayton.

I have taken measurements of XJs, ZJs, and WJ and all have different frame measurements. There are made for ZJs or WJs. They weld to the bottom of the frame rail and fit between the lower control arms mounts to give it a flat surface along the bottom of the frame.
