Post subject:  axle ?
i just picked up for FREE a matching set of gm half ton 6 lug axles with 4:11s. just wondering if they are gonna be worth stuffing under the kj. i plan on building them pretty beefy. any info would be takin. thanx

depends on what axles they are, you wont want the 4.11's in there for the SFA though youll probably need something more like 4.56 or 4.88 depending on the tire size you want to run. Its best if you go through the axle and completely rebuild it also, new bearing, races, etc.

The front won't work, passenger side drop, might as well dump the rear too since it has the six bolt lug pattern it is probably a 10 bolt chevy axle, which is worth all the work to put under the a KJ either. Look for mid 70's Ford F150 axles.

Yep stay away from 1/2 ton Chevy axles,fronts will not work under a KJ without major mods since they are passenger side drop.Now 3/4ton and 1ton Chevy rear axles(C14 bolts,both 6 and 8lugs) are very nice and beefy,cheap to build to.

Yep. Unless you are changing transfer cases, too.......... Sorry, no work.

If they are from a '77-earlier Chevy, the front is a D44 instead of the corporate 10-bolt. GMC's held onto the D44 until '80. I don't see a rear 10bolt as any improvement over the 8.25 except that it matches that front in width & lug pattern. The 6-lug 14bolts were 9.5" ring gears and semi-float: not a bad axle but not near a full-float 10.5" 14bolt. There were also some 6-lug corporate 12bolt rearends. IIRC.

Sure,you'd need to swap the knuckles for Chevy D44 knuckles unless you swap in a matching 6 bolt wheel pattern rear axle.I believe the Isuzu Amigo has a 6 bolt wheel pattern D44 that would work.

a lot of the Waggy's have D44 f&r, but Im not too sure on the newer ones.

HP, but you don't want that one. Has Cast radius arm wedges, so you cannot cut them off. 77 and older would be better so you can cut the welded wedges off.

even if im not using it for a SFA on the KJ? I also found a '72 EB D44. I need to find a front axle for my CJ, and I know these are drivers drop, but I have a way around it.

The '79 HP44 has the casted wedges like stated,unless you plan on using the Ford radius arms on any vehicle then pass for a '73-'78 HP44.The '72 EB HP44 is a good choice,it's shorter the the F-150 HP44 and you will need to get Chevy(or Crane)Knuckles and use Chevy caliper brackets,Chevy calipers,Chevy small bearing spindles,Chevy outer 19 spline stub axles,and Ford rotors to switch to disc brakes.

ok one last one now, I also found a matching set of D44's from a 1979 Scout 2 Traveler with a 345 and auto. Do you know if that front axle is good?

Can't say for sure,not familiar with scout D44's.

The EB HP44 is very stout with 3/8" or 1/2" walled axle tubes,the WMS to WMS is about 62".With chromo axles and CTM's they will live upto 42" tires with light throttle.With stock shafts and Spicer 760 u-joints 35" tires with light throttle will be no issue.

My HP44 is from a mid '70's F150 and will be more then enough for my wheeling style running USA Alloy chromo axles(inner/outer) and CTM u-joints,of course with Precision 5.13's and a ARB locker also,with my 35" Toyo's.
