So where is the F100-F150 9",like '70-'84? By far the most common and found 9" rearend.

They are 65" WMS to WMS and come either is 28 or 31 spline.

The most important fact about 9" rear ends is you want a 3rd member that has a giant "N" on the center section which stands for Nodular Iron housing.

its either a N or a C for cast iron right? Whats wrong with the cast iron axles?
You wnat the 3rd member with the "N" on it,Nodular Iron is stronger then the regular casting.

As far as cost, I have about $1500 in a front D60 / rear D70HD combo and that includes new brakes, rear disc conversion, a new locker for the front and yes, a used detroit for the rear. I am fairly certain that this axle set is more than enough for the 37's I have now or the 38" boggers I want. Not all D70's are equal, and no, these are not going under a KJ. But the '79 Cherokee they are going under weighs about 4,200# stock and has a 109" WB, so the size is not a major departure from a KJ.

I read on forum after forum things like "should be good enough for X tire on X vehicle" and i would rather have a larger margin of error than "should be good enough." Especially if I can do it for 1/2 the cost of some other alternatives.

All I am saying is that there are options, darn good options, out there that are outside of the norm.

Yes, you can swap out the center sections on ford 9"-ers and can buy new nodular iron cases from places like Jeg's. And under a full-bodied rig, it does not take abuse, 10+ trails, & 42" tires to break 9" rears. they are just a 1/2 ton semi-float axle.
