I was wondering if axles out of an 85 wagoneer. front and rear would be good under the liberty?

Also they are selling a 70 model front and rear. These are affordable and local which is good for me.

Any thoughts? and what to ask if I contact the seller?

Are you wanting to swap your rear axle out? If you keep it you will save yourself a bunch of money and if you do keep it you can get a HP D30 from a Jeep Cherokee, the D30 is the same width as the 8.25 rear axle you have now.

the dana 44 wagoneer axles will work... but are not the best setup... the front is a low pinion but you would want a flat top knuckle d44 fsj in order to make the steering work... i would suggest a D44 from a 78 bronco... they come hp and are not that wide... your rear can work just a diff lug pattern. kj is 5x4.5 and the d44 is 5x5.5 but you can't really tell by looking at them... good luck

This is exactly the help I have been needing. I have been doing some research and I believe the HP D30 out of an XJ is going to be my best option. Also seeing as I go to school full time and work part time money is tight but I figure I will just start accumulating parts.

Headed to the pick and pull tomorrow to see what they got.

I can relate pal...mines in the brainstorming stages. I figure its something that won't get off the ground for another 4 years. I'm guna accumulate my axles and begin building those. By then I will have another DD and my KJ will be my project/toy.

On the other subject..I just built a rear D44 out of a full size Waggy with yukon 4.88s for my XJ. Its a great swap because the WMS is perfect for the XJ. The only issue is the waggy shafts are 6X5.5 so I had wheel adapters made as I couldn't afford new chromo axle shafts. Its a LP axle but I feel it will take hard abuse with anything lower than a 35".

The 70's Jeep Wagoneer axles are not a good choice. They are all passenger side drop axles. Unless you were going to install a different t-case.
In 1980 Jeep changed to a driver side drop axle. In 83-84 Jeep used an axle disconect system that makes the long side of the axle weaker. Also during that time they were using a Model 20 axle instead of the D44. There is nothing wrong with the Model 20 and it is stronger than a D44 MAYBE.
The WMS to WMS for Wagoneer axles is 62"

For HP44 axles you have to be careful which ones you get. The last 2 years (78-79) they used a soild front axle the radius arm mounts were cast into the axle tube instead of welded. You can also look for the F150 camper special which used leaf springs instead of coils. Also the HP44 was used with a lot of F250 trucks. If your going to run CoilOver's you could use the a 78-79 axle but mounting brackets would still be a pain in the butt around the radius brackets.

I have heard the same things when I was researching axles to put in my XJ. When I discovered that the full size waggys had narrow track width axles that would be compatible for my XJ (in relation to WMS to WMS) I immediately found one in my local boneyard and checked to see if it had D44s. I only needed a rear but I wanted a D44 because it would be easier to get parts (ie...axle shafts, lockers etc..) for rather than an AMC20. But I have heard that the 20s are very comparable to the D44 in strength. I've also heard the AMC20 housing is stronger than the Dana 44. I just find that they're harder to come by (atleast around me...).

I wouldn't use the front LPD44 from the full size SJ's but I would consider a rear if I were doing a narrow track SFA on my KJ. The KJ is not a whole bigger/heavier than an XJ and if you were going to stay under 35" tires I dont think you would have much of a problem with it.
