to me that just looks like someone took a 4wd transmission and put a flange on the back instead of a transfer case. can anyone confirm what is under that flange? is that the same 23 spline output that's on all the 4x4 models? that would make things a lot simpler.

Also to convert all you have to do it, one get a 4wd t-case, np231 from a xj is more common, or even a rubicon t-case.

just make sure you match the spline out of your tranny and your fine. We are using a TJ Dana 44 for the rear, np 231, and a xj non-disconnect HPD30.

i already have an np242, the awd option will be nice.

You will need to swap the trans output shaft to mount a t-case onto it,which means you have to completely tear apart the whole trans to do so,easy to do just very time consuming.

no! tell me it ain't so! these transmissions are still new enough that i don't want to have buy major parts for them. $$$.

so that flange back there doesn't just unbolt? i thought (and hoped) maybe it was set up similar to a hack & tap SYE.

The 4wd trans output shaft will not have threads on it,sorry but that output shaft will need to be changed.

if threads is the only difference i'm gonna run it. it won't be any weaker than a gun drilled axle shaft.

because of the treads the 2wd output shaft is shorter then the 4wd so you will not have any spline engagement(or amybe 1/4"-1/2" which is not enough).Oh and the full time option is not a good idea with the manual trans,you will have driveability issues and is why the 242 was never offered behind a manual trans.

After looking at the parts book for the '07 the 6-speed tranny the 2wd and 4wd models use a completely different mainshaft,not fun there swapping that out.

hmm... now that does seem to be a problem. i wonder if the long 231 input would work... on my ax 15 the output only stuck out about a quarter inch from the mating surface and it used the short input. where as some of the automatics have a further recessed output that was about 7/8 of an inch shorter than the ax15 and used a longer 231 input... i'm wondering if that will work...

and yes the 242 and 231 inputs are swappable for anyone that didn't know.


as for that, there are countless import performance cars with awd and manual transmissions. i'll take my chances if i can make it work.

If you look around other boards you'll find that a number of people tried running the 242 behind manual transmissions in XJs and found it to be very, very rough. If I remember correctly, a few even destroyed the tcase that way. The 242 is not a bad tcase at all, but the planetary differential in it apparently does not take well to the shock loads that you get when running a manual tranny.
