Post subject:  Dana 44's?

My brother is offering to let me take his Rubicon TJ axles with Dana 44's and the lockers...this wont be until next winter because he is going to part it due to a lot of engine, suspension and body problems. So would these work to do an SFA, will they be too wide, are there any problems that I would run into such as the lockers being added to my system? This is a 2003 or 04 i think Rubicon, so they are air lockers. Thanks,

Steve

(I am not planing on a SFA, but if these will work for it, its a maybe)

I think these would work. They should be a good width. A couple things...you would have to figure out how to make your speedometer work since the rear 44 won't have the speedo pick up. For the front one if I am not mistaken I think the Rubicons have low pinion 44s(just a thought)...seems like a decent choice and for free with lockers it sounds like it would be a good start. As someone told me before though...free Jeep parts make you spend more money:)

I will most likely spend the money, just need to know if the Rubicon axles are good for a SFA with the lockers

The '03-'06 Rubicon rear D44 is good, the front LP44 just uses a D44 R&P set but everything else is D30 and is no stronger then a HP30.With the front being LP your going to run into pinion angle/caster issues for the amount of lift needed to fit everything under the front of a KJ.

I agree w/ above. If someone gave me a set, I'd sell them to a Tj owner as an "awesome upgrade" and use the $$ to buy aftermarket axles OR at least a built HPD30 front to go w/ the 8.25.

Rebuild the engine. Replace the suspension. Body parts are everywhere including aftermarket. And over-all, you'll have a heep that no KJ could ever dream of becoming.

The new (read 2009 and beyond Rubicon ((maybe its 2010)) uses a true front high pinion D44. The guys are correct about the older ones. Typical crap American car company saving money so they can pay their retiries medical benefits longer (they live longer than they worked for the darn company) than you can imagine......
