Ok, I took the plunge, dove in. I couldn't make my mind up, either a Frankenlift or a solid axle, I felt i needed a new challenge so, I took the front assembly out, yesterday. Today, I have questions.

With this liberty being a CRD, I was concerned about the COG. I am wanting a little wider stance than the HP 30, I have been looking for HP 44. Found a 9" rear and a HP44 from a 79 F150 for $400, but the 44 has the big ring on both ends for the Ford link suspension. Before I bought the axles, I wanted to ask if anyone has used this style? or if this can be cut away? It looks like it might be on the axle permanently to me.

Thanks, Noel.

You want a '75-'77 HP44 from a Ford F100/150,there wedges(for radius arms) are welded on and can be removed. In '78 the went to cast wedges that can not be removed.I'd pass on the '79 HP44.Now a HP44 from a '79 3/4 F250 will work as they used leaf springs but would take some $$ to convert to 1/2 tone outers unless you went with a 8 lug rear axle like the matching D60 from the same F250.

I'm running a HP44 from a '75 F100,it had drum brakes but did a disc brake conversion along with many other goodies. It's 67" WMS to WMS.

Started out like this(I scrapped the 9" in the below pic).

OE mounts cut off, partial TJ mounts welded on,regeared and locked(5.13's and ARB).

Ready for paint.

Finished.

Add the below up.................

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=29710&p=302821#p302821

Then roughly times by 2,pretty close with the price of my KJ included.Lucky insurance paid for the paint job(hail damage).

I can tell you from right now, I have been working on a CRD SFA since NOV of last year. I wish we would have went with wide tracks just for the stance, and COG. The liberty is actually on its way to becoming done.

My son was driving to school one morning during a heavy rain storm, hydroplaned on water standing in the road. he spun twice and flipped the CRD when it slid in the ditch. Zac was uninjured, but the driver side and cab roof was damaged. the insurance said total loss, paid off and I kept the Jeep. I have hammered out the cave in, but still is a sore site.
the drivetrain is good, I just wanted to put a lift on the CRD so it didnt dig in to every rock when offroad. I wasn't sold on keeping the aluminum front axle, so i tore in, like I said, no turning back. I want a wider stance than the dana 30, I think the heavy front end is part of the reason for my sons wreck. I want to keep the CRD hiway legal, but be capable offroad as well.

Good to hear!!
I am building a new cradle for the engine support and steering box. I thought about cutting into the stock cradle but figured I would loose some structure strength, I think the CRD has some twisty torque that I need to be prepared for. I was curious if you cut your cradle or fabbed a new one?

This is what started the whole project.

We did our own recovery, I didn't want it to end up at a body shop.

Disassembly Process.

Hammering the cab back.

I dropped the front axle and all components. Now I'm ready for fabrication.

I have a lead on a rocktrac t/c from a rubicon. Will this t/c hook up to the 545RFE?
I searched other threads but couldn't find a definate answer.
Thanks,

Yes but the shifter will read backwards, when in 4low position the RockTrac will be in 2wd and when in 2wd the RockTrac will be in 4low.

You could peal the label off and flip it over so it read upside down:) Or have a new label made and put it on the T case.

It is like it never changed after a couple times driving mine (got used to it quick). Nice thing is if I leave it in Neutral when parked and someone jumps in to steal it, they are not going to go very far very fast while trying to figure out the shifter positions.

The rack and pinion is a dd shaft instead of spline, I can get a borgesson set and solve that problem,,,,,,, I think......

also; iI am know looking at a scout II for axles. I havent seen it yet, just been told.
I know it has dana 44, but will it have a hp 44 driver side? I am not familiar wih IH.
I have a nother lead on a 1976 F250 High Boy 4x4 complete truck 800.
Later, Noel.

IHC Scout II is passenger side drop, doooop. Hi-boy 76 is low pinion.
There is someone going through the north Texas area buying all of the high pinion 44 axles that aren't attached to anything. I just missed every axle by 1 or 2 days, they said.
I found plenty of 78-79 f150 axles. Ya da ya da ya da.
I picked up a 78 f250 today that was on blocks. Literally picked it up.
Image

I had to rob spare tires from work trailers to get on the trailer.

Future CRD rear axle.

Image

I can use some of this steering.

Image
Did you notice the brocken tug strap on the front leaf hanger, this truck was severly stuck at one time, or maybe more than that.

This will be the front axle. I'll probably paint it before I install it.
