Post subject: | Axle width question |
In considering an axle for an SFA conversion, I'm sure you would need to consider axle width. So my question is there any difference in the axle width for a Dana 30 from a TJ, XJ or even YJ? And how wide is the axle width on the KJ, hub to hub I guess? The thing I'm getting at is to find an axle as close in width to the original width of the KJ since we don't have any aftermarket flares to accomadate a wider track width. If they are all pretty close in length, then I would have more options at the junkyard to find the right axle for the swap. Thanks. |

TJ, XJ would probably be your best bet to match the 8.25 rear. |

TJ, YJ, XJ, ZJ all had the same width D30, however the strength of the D30 differed. All the 1984-99 XJ's had the high pinion D30, but the TJ, ZJ, and 2000-01 XJ's had the low pinion D30's. In mid/late 96, the XJ's got the stronger 297 ujoints instead of the weak 260 joints, so for the strongest D30, you want 97-99 XJ high pinion D30's. 1996 are tricky as they switched front 260 to 297 joints during the year, so it's safer to just stay away. YJ's I believe had the low pinion D30 with the 260 joints, and they are leaf spring over, so if you go with the five link coil setup, there will be a lot of extra fab work on the YJ axles. If you can't find any newer XJ axles, or can't find them at a reasonable price, then you can go with a 91 or newer D30 and due a conversions so you have the stronger UJoints. I forget what year, but sometime before 91, some of the D30's on the XJ's were vaccum disconnect. |

Actually, the XJ always had the HP30 for 1984-99. 2000-2001 XJ's had the LP30. The biggest change to the HP30 from 97-99 (actually started mid 1996 models) was the strength of the UJoints used, making the mid 96-99 HP30 the strongest front axle to come stock in an XJ. The suspension setup never changed from 1984-01. |

Allyrand is running a HPD30 in the front and no problems. Could you please shrink your avatar pic down a little? |
