Coal Creek OHV, TN -- 1st week of April

I'm from Indiana and plan to meet up with my brother from SC in Townsend, TN and spend a day or two wheelin' at Coal Creek OHV. We want to know which trails you recommend for our rigs.

Me: 2003 KJ Sport 4x4
Tires: General Grabber AT2 245/70R16
Lift: Daystar 1.5" front, 2" rear
Armor: Mopar engine skid
Differentials: open
Tranny: Auto

Dan: 2006 TJ "X"
31" Mickey Thompson Baja Claw radials on MT Classic II.
I don't think he has any skid plates.

We'd love to have somebody who's driven those trails join us if you can. The more the merrier! We haven't settled on specific day(s) yet, other than some time after the last weekend of March. I'm guessing Sunday April 1 and/or Monday April 2.

I've never been there myself...I'm sure if you post up in the General section looking for ppl that have been there they can help you out...sometimes I think TN is split between Southern lost (memphis to Nashville) and all the East Coast guys (Carolina and Mid-Atlantic) but who knows maybe someone from our area has been there...sounds like a good trip, wish I could make it but i'll still be in school then...make sure to get some pics, but then again i think that was understood by your name...

I have never been to coal creek and have no clue about it but I may have the money and the time by then to go
what do you know about it?
how hard or easy are the trails?

I would not mind going but it is 12+ hours drive in a TJ for me to go
I am moded prety good and by then should be on 32" swampers

as far as the skids on the TJ
they come factory with 3 after '03 I think I know that he should have a trans and a X-fer case as well as a fuel tamk skid wich is all he will need unless the trails are rated real high

if they do a 1-5 rating then any thing over 3 both of you will have problems
unless it is real dry
if they do a 1-10 rating ,like the jeep jambo, then any thing up to maby 6 you both should be fine

I've been there on an ATV, in fact I'm going again the second week of April. It's pretty easy to just feel your way as you go. You have paved roads, gravel roads, dirt roads and ATV trails. Make sure you drive up to the top of the moutain and check out the windmills! They are something like 40 stories tall. The people around there are very friendly also and will help you with info. When I went, a buddy left his wallet in a unzipped bag on his ATV and lost it on the trail somewhere at night. Someone turned it in to the security office the next day and all the cash and cards were still in there.

I have been on 26,27, 36 ,35 and up 22,21 and all the G trails.we have done them in my stock 05 LJ and the Liberty been there five times last year .You will not have a hard time finding the trails get a map at the snack bar or order one and it tells you which you can do.The last time some hard ones were tame and thay had made some new ones. Like all pictures when you have both hands on the wheel you miss the good places.G7 is a nice long ride but you have to come back the way you went in.

Killer pictures, Skipperb! Looks just right.

If we were closer to home we might try some more difficult trails, but we'll have our whole families staying down in Wear Valley and don't want to leave 'em stuck there if we get major trail damage. My dad asks what our backup plan is, in case of a breakdown. I told him we'd tow/push the disabled Jeep to a paved road and call DCX Roadside Assistance!

We plan to hit Coal Creek at dawn Monday morning. They use ratings of Easy, Moderate, and Difficult -- from an ATV perspective, not trucks/Jeeps. I'm guessing we'll have no problems on all the Easy and most Moderate trails. Will avoid Difficult. We'll only have about 3 hours to wheel anyway, but we'll take what we can get. It will give us a break from the wives. :wink:

Man, what a great place! We got a late start Monday (4 p.m.) and only got to wheel about an hour and a half. We rode trails 2, 3, 5, 6, and maybe 15 and 22. (It was pure luck that we found our way out on time!) Beautiful clear day, about 75 degrees. You could see for miles. It was our first time offroading at 2K-3K feet. Waterfalls. Just magnificent terrain, we were hoping for more mud and rocks, and less gravel, but being newbies, we followed the yellow markers as instructed to avoid getting lost and biting off more than we could chew.

I will try to post some pics when my brother gets them off his camera. I made some stupid camcorder mistakes and missed recording the best areas. :cry:

I can't wait to go back some day.
