Post subject:  Making A Canopy For Blackhawk
I needed some place to get out of the sun when I'm on the beach. So today I started playing around a little bit. I attached the canvas to the roof rails using clamps that are made to tighten a motorhome's awning on the sides. As it is in the pictures I don't have both side supports yet.

The side brace is setting over the lock/unlock button on the front door. That way it won't slide around.

Here is the cross brace showing the upright post going through the canvas and the plastic pipe. A large wire nut holds everything together.

The one problem so far is the plastic pipe tends to bend. I wonder if putting a wooden dowel rod inside would stop that?

im not sure id use the lock as the mount point.. id make something to fit into the door handle.
id worry that there isnt enough of the lock to hold on to.

but great idea! and good job fabricating!

The idea of using the lock button came from the brace sliding around. As for the wind...I don't know yet. I would like to get something a little stronger for the supports. I'll look around and see what I can come up with. Okay, for the 4th. or 5th. time... :lol: ...I paid a friend of mine $700.00 to spray the Jeep. He did all the masking etc.

Just wondered cause that is perfect for those of use that camp. An easy why of setting up some cover with out having to use the trees. (cause they never are spaced quite right)

The reason I used the plastic stuff was weight and won't rust. I put a piece of smaller diameter plastic pipe inside the brace and that did seem to make it better. I think 1 guy rope on each side would stop any side to side motion in windy conditions. I'll be testing it out to see what all happens.

That's a really cool idea, Terry. Now you've got me thinking about fabing one for our Jeep. Check out Camping World for your tie-downs. They have some metal ones that screw into the ground that would work perfectly and they have a store right in your back yard.

Hey Terry.... it was mentioned about possibly damaging your lock, here's maybe an idea.... Get a T fitting, cut your pipe so the t will be on the outside of the door, then add a short piece in the bottom. That way the ends will slide over the outside and inside of your door preventing the pole from sliding in or out, maybe make it more stable. Since you got everything lined, don't have to worry about rubbing the paint on the outside :mrgreen:
The dowl rod inside the tube may help the bedning, one drawback of PCV in long sections used for support.
