Quiet M/T tires?

I'm looking to replace the 235/85/R16 Maxxis Bighorns with another tire in the same size. The Maxxis tires have been the hands down winner for muddy/rock crawling NE wheeling for the past two years (MTR's before them). BUT- they are LOUD on the highway... Can't talk on the phone or hear the radio loud. Hoping to find a M/T in 235/85/R16 (this size works great with my lift without rubbing) that has great traction off road. BFG M/T doesn't have that size. Looking to stay under $180/tire. I heard good things about the Kumho Venture MT's

Any other suggestions in this size/price range?

i got the brand new Fierce Attitude m/t in 265 /75 r 16 they were $165 a tire

and i really like em , very quiet and smooth on the road. they hook up great in snow , can't wait till summer to try em out in the dirt

I think most any MT tire will be louder on the highway, just the nature of the beast. If you don't need the full on MT there are several tires out now that are an agressive tread more than a AT but still fairly quiet on the road
Goodyear Duratracs are 149 each on Tirerack in the 235-85-16 great tire, snow rated etc

Kumho makes a good tire, buddy had a set of those in the pic on his XJ, they were good at first as far as being fairly quiet but got louder as time went on. Plus being direction wear pattern was a problem at least on his

In that size...

BFG KM2 (a little loud but still quite for a MT)
Kumho Road Venture MT KL71 (no personal knowledge, but I hear they are good and quiet))
Goodyear M/TR w/ Kevlar (very good, very quiet, the KM2 is better in some areas off road, worse in others)
Cooper Discoverer STT (Super quiet, and works well)

i have the plain old buckshot mudders and i do not think they are that loud. i also have some buckshot xmt mudders that don't seem to be any louder, but i haven't run them since i replaced both of my front wheel bearings (they will be going on later this week).

come to think of it, you might want to check your wheel bearings. i thought my tires were getting louder as they wore, but as it turns out, it was the wheel bearings. i actually bought the new tires and rims because of how obnoxiously loud i thought the old tires were getting! live and learn....but now i have 2 sets of meats!!

I have the Firestone MT's on the Rennie and while not deafening, they are considerably louder than the street meat we have on the Libby. I have to turn the radio up about twice as loud. Haven't yet experienced driving with the windows down since we've only had it through the winter, so I have no idea how loud it could possibly be au naturel.

Ours aren't 235's, though. They're 245's.

X2 with the wheek bearings. I thought my Destination AT's were getting SUPER loud this past summer but come to realize that my bearings were almost shot. So I got them fixed and there was no more loud noise

eh

bearings are pretty cheep, i guess when i feel like pharting around i'll get a set and not question it

there had been a few times where i thought i had heard a bearing chirp before i got the new to me, used tires

yeah, i though the same thing, only it was the bearings, not the tires! and the bearings are not cheap unless you are independently wealthy....$206 ea w/o abs. what tires are you running?

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked the bearings and they seem OK - however the alignment looks like it's off. Hopefully with a new tire purchase a discounted alignment will be included. Any feedback with purchases from Tire Rack?

for some reason i was thinkin the bearings were about 20 bucks from rockauto, i'd probably just opt to replace the entire hub, is that the case for 200 bucks? I haven't really looked into the hub/bearing situations

and yeah it's the tires, the tires were already worn to the loud level when i got them, so instantly after putting them on in place of the 255-70 michelin style tires the 245-75 mastercraft courser M/T's started singing

most every tire ive ever had on a truck of 4x4 has been a loud tire, so i actually grinned when i heard it the first time

tirerack-

i've gotten tires from tirerack twice, nothing negative, suggestion though

if you see tires CHEEPER somewhere else, contact tirerack and try to get them to beat the price, they did both times for me

Your alignment has a huge role in how loud a tire can be or not be.Oh and your going to have a hard time getting a discounted alignment if you bring in your own tires and not buy them at the place.

For a KJ you must replace the whole hub unit,the bearings are not separately serviceable.

After a bunch of research - Here are two contenders in 235/85/R16 M/Ts.

My local independently owned tire place quoted me $957 for the Firestone Destination M/T's and $1000 for the Cooper STT's (out the door for 4 mounted/balanced including tax and 4 wheel alignment) - this place has lots of successful experience with alignments on lifted rigs and are familiar with my KJ

Anyone have any experience with either type on the rocks/mud?

Update - the new Firestone M/T's were installed today. They look great, seem a little tall for their size, and are fairly quiet on road (so-far). They will be tested on next weekend's run

Same size - 235/85/R16. But it seems the Firestones run tall for that size - they measure the same height as the 4 year old 33" ProComp M/Ts on my YJ...
