LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Poll: 17" wheels

Tom, out of curiosity, why do you prefer 4" of backspacing as to 5" of backspacing? I realize that 4" inches gives you a wider stance, but other than that, is there is a reason?

Looking at the original KOs between 245-255/65-75r17.

Full spring for sure. I forgot that the full spring will give you 2.25-2.5. OME is what I'm leaning towards, if I can find where my wife hid my wallet...

I have cookie cutters (245/70/17) on my OE rims at the moment. If I added the Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacer, then I would be at 4.25". Once I finally get the 4:10's installed, then I'm going to move up to a 245/70/17. I honestly think the factory 5.5" of backspacing seems a little unstable on a lifted KJ. After riding in other KJ's with a wider stance, the Jeep does seem more stable.

For those who don't mind running Spidertrax wheel spacers, the Nitro spare still might be an option.

Noob Alert- I am really confounded by the wheel spacer thing. If I lift 2.25-2.5 in and keep the stock rims and put say 245/70r17s on will spacers help rubbing (fender,swaybars,etc.)? I need to re-read the whole backspace issue again as well I guess. The Unique 83B 17x7s come with 38mm offset and the KK stocks are 41mm (or vice versa,lol), With close to same BS/offset it wouldn't work well lifted in regards to rubbing w/o spacers. KKs need 4'' of BS when lifted for the best setup?
Sorry if I am wasting people's time, I'm sure the answer is right in front of me-literally. I'm re-reading this whole topic over and over! Should probably just dive all the wheel topics and read up!

One other thing also is the fact that as you lift an IFS you also pull the wheels in towards the frame a very small amount so this also helps when installing spacer / different wheels.

Is easy,just lay the rim down flat and measure from the back side to the rim edge. Google it if you need more info.

Picture is worth a few words Stock wheels for the KJ/KK line up are 5 or 5.5 inch back spacing When Lifted we want to have 4 inch / 7 inches wide

You need it wide enough to keep off the body/sway bar (5.5" is not enough for larger/wider tires)

I realize that 4" inches gives you a wider stance, but other than that, is there is a reason? 4 inch gets the tires out far enough so not much if any rub on the sway bar, and also sits them out a little further in the wheelwell , looks better and also little wider track. 5 inch is not enough, since like the MOABs at 5 inches I have rub on the sway bars pretty bad at times. One reason I am swapping them out , If they were 7 inches wide / 4 inch backspace they would be great

Is there a certain lift height where the BS needs to change? I'm thinking of the 1.5 econo lift and new wheels/tires but should I buy wheels with 4in BS or are the 5-5.5 in BS still good?

A lot depends on what size tires you are wanting to run and tread type What lift are you going with? If full spring like Ironman or OME then you'll get more than 1.5 inches , more like 2.25-2.50 If spacer style then its hard to say since you have to figure in how much its already sagged so you may only get 1/2 to 1 inch or real lift over new stock

For that lift on a KK you'd need to stay in the 245-70-17 / 265-65-17 range which are 30.6 inches tall , anything taller say like the 255-75-17 ( 32.3) is way too big plus would require a regear. For a 32 inch tire on a KK you need 4 inch plus lift

There are some nice sweeping turns down home that when mine was still stock 8 years ago I could take them at 55-60. These days I can cruise through at 65-70 easy enough .

After riding in other KJ's with a wider stance, the Jeep does seem more stable. On my KJ (not KK) with about 5" of BS and 255/75r17 I have a few MM of sway bar clearance. I bet with a wider (i.e. 265mm) tire it would come close to rub. It really is all about the tire's center section width, and circumference (if the same section width but with a smaller radius it would rub more likely)

Yes mine rubs when turned all the way, which I do rarely but every now and again I do to keep the paint worn off I've been in a couple of tight spots / twisted up pretty good off road that it really rubbed the sway bar

The answer is between 5-4" of BS (based on a 7" not 7.5" wide wheel, that is around 15-25 mm BS, if you see over 30mm backspacing WALKAWAY) The whole purpose of using these Mopar wheels is to have the correct wheel width, backspacing, and diameter, a perfect fit for ME There are 25.4mm in an inch, so 1.25" spacers will SUBTRACT 31.75mm from whatever offset is listed on the wheels... I have run two different set of spacers throughout the years. Spacers have their place, but for me, I wanted to find a wheel that did NOT require spacers

With only a 2.5 inch lift you can most likely get away with stock rims and a 30 inch tall tire ( like the 245-70-17 again depending on brand/ tread design) Many have done it already. But what comes into play is that most want a little wider look and also possibly better handling by having a wider stance. So that is where either spacers or wheels with a different backspacing come into play.
