hey! finally had to bite the bullet and get the tires.... they do look very nice, bfg 245 70-16 ta/ko... Discount tire said to run the pressure down from factory rec's of 65 to 35..... I didn't like the bulging... had em put 40 psi in em.... is there any down sides to running this low... dealer claimed "no"... seemed a little mushy in obstacle avoidance.... ride of course was smother...

40 lb is low, you're joking right?
I would run more like 34/36 at most
40 you're going to wear out the centers first
65 lb is max and for someone with maybe a ton truck hauling 10 tons

at 35 psi there is bulging that resembles a tire going flat... and steering is definately very mushy. I ran em higher when going to the U.P. this past wekend.... main thought was fuel economy... can go back down if needed?.... any and all input is welcome... this is our first jeep... (first 4x4 period)....

There will be some bulging, nature of radial tires,
not like the old bias ply or the little rubber rings they throw on 24s  like this

I mean here are mine at the correct pressure and they are wearing flat across at 34 lb

Thanks for the guidance... have dropped back to 35 psi... What would be the lower recomended tire pressures (5 psi... 10psi) for sand or snow on the trails?

Depends on what you are going through but off road I drop to 18/20 with no problems at all, some will go lower even depending on what they are going through or over

Mostly sand or mud around these parts... until winter at least... we have very few rocks in our part of the state. ( I tend to avoid our heavier beach sand areas).

I run at 41PSI to help witht he side wall deflection. If I get more than 20,000 miles out of a pair I am happy. I rotate from front to back. New on the front, fronts to rear and rears to the trash.

THe tire place I got mine asked me what I wanted them at? I said not what it says in the door I wanted more air. We sort of both thought that 35 psi would give good economy and a decent ride which it does and mine are comming up on the second rotatoin and wearing well.

How do you all rotate yours? I have 5 of the same tires and rotate the spare in with a 5 tire rotation.

Anyone ever run 255/65/16 size tires? I'm planning on purchasing a set of General Grabber AT2 in this size. Anyone have any comments or suggestions with this size compared to a 245/70/16 setup?

If anything it will help correct the error. The speedos are WAY off with stock tires. I will be switching to 245/70/16 soon and will advise the difference.

Speedo error is ok depending on the speed, I used the GPS for the cruise.

Kumho no longer makes the 798 :( Looks like I will be going to the KL61 as a replacement. It is a downgrade to the H-speed rated tires I have been running but the weight is 2lb per tire lighter. ;)

With the 245/70/16 speedo still reads low by 7 to 8%. A bit more accurate but way off regardless. Mine at speedo reading of 110 KMH, GPS reads 102 to 103 KMH. You could go WAY bigger tires and still be within range.
My VW's have always been off by 4% or so. I run slighlty larger 245/40/18" (should be 235) tires and get it down to 2 to 3%. Sadly my 235/45/17" (stock size) winters seem smaller and throw it off by 5 to 6%....
Even with a 265/70 the Jeep would still read low I think....

No actually with 265-70s mine was real close
with 265-75s and stock gearing etc I was at about 8-9 mph off

but then if you've never ran that size i guess you wouldn't know
