Good street tires.

I did a complete 360 today in the rain!!! This was a first for me. I always have alittle fun in the rain with my locker, but today it was different. I was pulling out of campus taking a left at the redlight. I gave it alittle gas and around she started to come(did about a 280). I let off the gas and turned the wheel all the way right but she was gone. My front right right tire bounced off the median and I rolled back alittle. I cut the wheel all the way left and gave it some gas and spun it back around. I must say i would love to have that on video b/c I felt like I was in nascar. I didnt turn it back around, but SPUN it back around! I bet those people sitting at that redlight pooed their pants. :lol:

ANYWAY, does anyone know of a really good street tire that I could get? Now that I have 2 sets of rims and tires, I want a dedicated street and offroad tire(already have offroad tires). Im tired of these crappy goodyears almost getting me killed everytime it rains. Let me say that its not fun at all when Im doing 70mph(speed limit is 65mph and I just try to keep up with traffic) and take a small turn on the interstate and i can feel the entire jeep sliding sideways into on-coming traffic! :shock:

I looked around on tirerack but they only have a couple tires in 235/65/17 and I do not want a tire any bigger than that. I was actually thinking of getting one thats smaller for towing and less downshifts on hills.

Im putting the generals on until I can get some new tires on the 17in rims. I like my life alittle bit to much to die b/c goodyear sucks at life. :roll:

I did that once, except it was in the snow and ice and in my old stock gy tires with 60k on them. :shock:

It was kind of fun. :lol:

Try some Silent Armor or Revos. Not too aggressive like your Generals.

I dont think the locker helps (I know it makes things worse) but that is a little extreme
We have the wrangler AT/S's on our KJ and we have to try to get "1 wheel peel" in the rain

It was fun while it was going on, but afterwards I was thinking of all the"what if's." If someone would of been turning right on the opposite side of the road, I would of completely taken the side of their car out with the back of my jeep. If the middle would of been a wall and not just alittle curb, the front of my jeep would be flat. You know, all that good stuff.

Im trying to find a tire thats good and light like my current tires. The side walls are very soft(which sucks for rocks) which makes the ride really nice. They only weigh 31lbs and im going to try and keep it around that. The silent armors weigh 39lbs!! My generals weigh 41lbs and they are 1" bigger. I want these to be my summer tires and towing tires. The lighter they are the better they do with mpg and hills. :wink:

Those tires look crazy jason! I bet it would be hard to hydroplane with those big grooves running though them!

Are you talking about the AT/S's?
they do real good on wet streets and fair to good on dirt trails but bring the suck in mud

we will probably get the BFG MT next

My SR-A's SUCK in the wet. They are getting replace with Grabber's or Nokians in a week or so.

Yup, I was talking about your AT/S's jason.

Mine were the goodyear wrangler HP's. They were really good in every situation but with miles started to get really hard. I understand the libby sucks at handling since its center of gravity is so high and plus I have a lift. Ill see how these generals do in the rain and then Ill know if the HP's suck as bad as I think.

Im going to try and keep the price down on the street tires. The tires in the link above were only $96 a piece. The revos and goodyears are much higher than that. The only thing, if I ever decided to sell my offroad tires, I would be stuck with some crappy street tires that would suck offroad.

I have the Tripletred and HL versions of the GY Forteras and love them particularly in wet. Got em based upon Cons Reports 2005 review of All Season passenger tires... rated No 1 for the tripletred passenger tires so I got the SUV Fortera version.

I had the GY Fortera's HL's and also the Tripletreads based upon Consumer Rep's SUV/truck in 2004 and last years Top rating for passenger tire who compare them side for wet, dry, handling braking emergency etc etc objectively and found them good too. I had the stock GY ST, GSA and also the Mich Artic Ice snows. The Trips gripped as good as my snows. I highway mostly and city with little or no off roading.

I buy the best tire on the market with $$ not an issue based upon CS report since I spun out on stockers long ago too. It rains here alot!!!

My advice is that the ratings on the tire shop sites are fine but are subjective to the individual based upon their past tire usage and don't measure them objectively... it's like I like KJ's while others like Explorers... all opinions and everybody has one...

Pix available if somebody would post em for me....

Can't comment on others as I have not tried them on the KJ..

Jeepster,

If you don't wheel offroad too often, consider keeping your Grabbers as on-/off-road tires. That way, you're covered no matter what. I only go offroading a 4-5 times a year, but I still chose the Grabber AT2's to replace my Wrangler ST's for pavement driving. (Of course, I don't drive on the highway during my daily commute, mainly rural and neighborhood streets 40-45 mph.) They're a good all-around Jeep tire for a fair price, which can save you from having to swap wheels when you get the sudden urge to hit the dirt. Keeps life simple.

Bottom line, most ANY tire will be an improvment over your "crappy Goodyears." Just my two cents -- you can keep the change.

Only thing about keeping these as the all around tire, I made the trip back to college for the first time with the generals yesterday. Noticed a 2-3 mpg lost and it wouldnt hold speed at all on the hills without downshifting. Its lost all of its low end torque which I loved dearly.

Wow. That sucks. Was your KJ fully loaded with cargo for dorm/apartment? Were you aired down or at pavement psi? Gotta take that into consideration. Maybe it's time to regear. ??? I considered regearing, but considering my KJ gets 17 mpg driving 90% in the suburbs and city, I haven't noticed enough of a decrease in mpg or torque to justify the cost.

The best all around street tire in my opinion is Michellin's LTX M/S. As I have said before I always get 75K-80K out of them. However as a secondary tire I would save some money and go with Firestone's Destination LEs.

LTX's are a great tire. I ran them on a fleet of E350 van-chassis buses. Was the only tire I could find that the Ford van chassis couldn't trash quickly.

I want a good highway cruising tire for my CRD and will likely get the Firestone Destination LE's. They are also available in the factory size 225/17/16 (extra load) and the wider 245/70/16.

35 psi, nothing in the jeep but me. It did much better when loaded down with the stock tires moving in. MPG was even better.

It actually feels like im towing our boat when Im on stock tires.

Good street tires.
