Just looked at Tire Rack, recommend rim width is 6.0-7.0, not sure if they will fit on 8.0 wide rims.

245/75 16 MTR's are shown as recommended for 6.0 to 7.5 rims. But they come standard on the Rubicon 8.0 inch Moab rims.

So the question is what is the significance of the recommended rim width? how much can you deviate without getting into trouble?

You can run 235/85's on a 8" rim, just you will wear the outer tread more no matter what psi you run since they are made for 6-7" rims. You can usually get away with .5" either way but will wear the outer or inner tread faster if you go beyond that.Plus the tires won't perform well on a too wide rim offroad, rim damage will be a greater risk since it sticks out farther than the tire side walls. Also a 235/85 will not be it's advertized hieght on a 8" rim, only on a 6"-7" rim.

Makes sense. especially the part about increase chance of rim rash. Looks like this size would be best on the stock rims with about a 1 inch spacer.

I'm kicking around ideas for my next set. I wan't something a little taller and quieter than the MTR's but still good off road. I've been Leaning towards the Grabber AT2's 255/70's or 265/75's which will both fit on 8' width rims, but the 235/85's are just a bit taller. I really like the Moab's so I guess I'll skip the 235's.

I have found 3 that list a 7.5 inch rim

Geolander A/T S
Hankook MT_RT03
and General Grabber AT2 (on the General website - not on Tirerack)

I'm still debating those (my MTR's have a few months left)

Very interesting. I wonder why TireRack is different?

On 8.0 inch rims, the tires will be a little shorter than the 32 advertised, but may tuck in the wells better and reduce the chance of damaging the flares. Probably need to add a longer bump stop in back for sure.

I've seen a number of threads on this tire size, but have not heard of anyone actually running them.

Anyone out there running 235/85's???
