Silly question, I know, but I have the stock 17 freedom wheels, and the 235 stockers seem too narrow to me. Can I go up to a 245-265 on stock rims? Does tread width mean the tire will stick out further on the sides?

If you stay with the same rim a wider tire will stick out slightly more. A 245 will roughly be wider by 10mm. So that's 5mm per side. A 265 will be 15 mm wider per side.

I'm pretty sure that if you look around the forum you'll notice that if you go to a 265 you will need to do a lot of trimming.

yeah, I know. I put on my moab/mtr and they hit the pinch weld and the front.

Id like a beefier tire, I just want to know if treadwidth will prohibit the placement on a stock rim

245/65-R17 tires have a rim width range of 7-8.5"

it will rub at full turn, also inner sidewall will be too close to the arms with 245. A few people run it on stock, some modified slightly, while others run fine without any modifications. 265 will probably not work at all.

Even with a 2.5 inch Rusty's coil lift?

Yes even with 2.5 lifts there is still a rub at full turn
I have used spacers and stop the rub at full turn .but you start to get into rub at full stuff on back.

Yep, lift won't stop rubbing on the inside. Spacers will but you really don't need to go wider unless you got rims that stick out with higher offset/backspacing,etc.. then that's not great for offroad.
