All,

I am planning to buy news tires fairly soon. My plans are to get stock sized MTs - probably BFG. My only experience with MTs have been with a soft top TJ and they were Swampers. Needless to say, it was loud. Those with experience with MTs (225/75r16) on a Liberty, please, tell me how loud they are. Thanks in advance.

Depends on the tire. Some are loader than others, some are about the same as some ATs. Which are you looking at?

I've got Goodyear MTR's - they're loud - varies with speed - worse about 40-50 - almost quiet at 60+.
Great for Moab.... but not for Austin - I'll get AT's when these wearout.

My question is very subjective I know but I guess that I just want to hear people's description of the noise level. As I said above, I have experience with a soft top TJ with swampers and BFG MTs. The swampers were very loud and squirmed on the road. The BFGs were completely different, but that was with a soft top. I have never even riden in a SUV with MTs. Can you hear your radio? Do they squirm on the road? Just your opinion. Thanks in advance.

Also - If it gets too loud - that means you need to rotate'em.

Radio can cover it - some folks don't even notice too much - but it's there.

I have a TJ with MT's ,el cheepo's, and had 225/75 16 AT's on the KJ now have 245/75 16 MTR's

From the wife who drive the KJ every day
"when the noise is there it bugs the poop out of me but it is only there some times (30-40 mph) I like the bigger nobbier tires better
it looks more like a jeep now."
"I would have kept the AT's but they were worn and besides with in a year or so we will be doing a lot more off roading in the KJ so the MTR's are or will be needed if that was not the case I would sell them and get some AT's"

I edted the wording like insted of "mud tires" I put in MTR's and insted of "tires like my old ones only better" I put in AT's

The noise does not bother me at all but like you I have a TJ with a soft top so noise is no biggie to me
I do know that it is louder than with the AT's but not even close to the noise in the TJ and at highway speed you dont even know they are there

My younger single brother brought up a good point once though he said that when you go out with a girl they want to ride in the jeep but it is to loud to talk to them he said that he prefers quiet in that situation

hope this helps

So Jason, What you are saying is an old married couple should be running a bikini top with 35's and the stereo cranked up, so you ain't gotta hear the girl yappin?

My uncle said that all the shootin in WWII did'nt wear down his hearin like his old lady. he said a wifes voice after about 5 years starts to sound like a chain saw.

Ronnie, I ran LT 225/75-16 Destinatin MT's on a spare set of rims

They are a bit louder at 30-50mph, They didn't stop as well as my AT's. They do a good job off road, only when the tread is new though.

Gas MPG not much diff.

At least if you go with firestone you have a trial period.

Everybody is different, My KJ ain't volvo quiet even with street tires.

ATXKJ is right on the money too

Here is a pro review:
