Cragar Soft 80 16x7 & Firestone Destination AT 235/70/16

I just ordered a set of the Cragar Soft 80 wheels in 16x7.

I plan to run the Firestone Destination A/t with this wheel for the winter and would like to know if the 235/70/16 size is doable without creating rubbing issues with a stock suspension... I'm thinking it should be ok from some threads that I have read.

I'd like to use the 235/75/16 size but I have concerns that size tire combined with the Soft 80 4" backspacing will probably have rubbing issues.

Any thoughts, or comments from members running a similar/wheel tire combination?

235-70X16s came as a stock size so youre good.You could even go 245-70X16 with just very minor rubbing when at full lock

The 235/70/16's that came stock were also on wheels which had 5.5" backspacing. These Cragar Soft 80's have 1.5" less backspacing which I believe pushes them closer to the fender lip, not sure if they actually come out to the edge of the fender lip.

Just ordered a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo size 235/70/R16 for my new set of Chrome Cragar Soft 80 16x7 4"BS wheels. Tires were $115.74 each and shipping for 4 was $37.52.

After considering all 3 brands with the UNI-T construction, Bridgestone Revo A/T, Firestone Destination A/T and Fuzion XTI A/T, I opted to go with the more agressive tread pattern and siping on the Bridgestone Revo. Shipping, mounting & balancing cost the same regardless of how expensive the tire.

Found some decent prices on both tires and shipping at http://www.roadwaywholesaletire.com

Great looking setup that performs as well as it looks. Had the white letters mounted on the inside.
First fitting of the front tire/wheels showed rubbing at the pinch weld and the front lower black plastic spoiler.
I cut out the plastic around the pinch weld and hammered down the weld as much as possible. I'll need to follow-up with some type of plastic or fiberglass patch over this area.

I cut out part of the lower black spoiler in front of each wheel with a sawzall. Still have a small amount or rubbing on the front side of the wheel well liner. Nothing too serious but I may use a heat gun in the future to soften and reshape the liner to clear the tire at full lock.

The stance with this tire/wheel combination looks a little more aggressive than the OEM wheels.

The Revos are a 100% improvement over the OEM Good Year POS tires. So far they are just as quiet as the OEM, provide 100% better traction on wet pavement, ice and snow. Haven't been in real deep snow yet, just up to 6".

I used a name brand wax on the chrome before exposing them to the salt and snow but they still wound up with some surface rust. One cleaning with the Turtle Wax Chrome cleaner and they looked like new and have been holding well over the last couple weeks.

Hope this helps out some people that are considering the same setup.

Update on the Cragar Soft 80/Revo combo.

Cragar Soft 80's: Continue to have issues with rust pitting and now peeling of chrome. Cragar's are certainly not the same quality that they were 10+ years ago. I would not recommend these due to the lack of durability of the chrome plating.

Bridgestone Revo's: Overall, I am happy with these, however, they have worn faster than I expected and will need to be replaced soon after puting about 30,000 miles on them.

Great , and also bad with the center caps, they are crap any more but then 15/20 years ago they would rust as well ! I wonder how many of those I threw away over the years! :-)r

back in the day:
better to run rusty cragars than to be dead in the ditch because you ran the 2 piece keystones and they separated

True, I did buy the Cragars for the solid steel construction, but it would be nice if the chrome held up for at least a year.

Any suggestions for a wheel manufacturer that makes a steel wheel with quality chrome plating that lasts longer than a year without pitting or peeling?

american racing if they still make them have one of the thickest clear coats

probably the better option would be to sand blast them and have them powder coated which i would do for you but i dont have a powder coat rig anymore

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the Cragar Soft 80/Revo combination is coming off next week. The aluminum OEM wheels with some new Blizzak DMV1's in 235/75/16 are going on for the remainder of the winter here in Wisconsin, which normally means until April.

I never thought about sandblasting and powder coating. Wouldn't that be a heck of a lot of sandblasting/beadblasting?

I wonder if Cragar and Turtle Wax are owned by the same company

it's not really that much sand blasting if you've got a cabinet sand blaster, could probably blast two rims in 15 minutes give or take

Got to try out the new Blizzak DMV1's the other day in the latest snow storm. Well worth the $ and a noticable step up from the Revos. Much better grip and quieter.

I'll save the Revos for the summer and burn off the remaining tread with some fair weather highway driving, something they are better suited for.

Like Tommudd said, I run 245/70/16 on soft 8s and no lift and get the smallest amount of rub ever at the pinch weld plastic - not even enough to have to pound at this point. Love the Cragars and the look is badass. I must mention it does push out the tires alot. in the rear I would probably have trouble offroading without a lift since the outside of the tire would meet the flare if it got stuffed. Most likely rip the flare off without a lift...I however do not offroad...yet...once lifted, no prob.
