 Post subject: Toyo Open Country ATs thick enough for offroading.

Hey guys, how worried should I be about offroading my Toyo Open Country ATs (P-metric 245/70r16). Wanted to save some weight over BFGs, or Grabbers, but the trade off is the ply. The sidewalls will be the weak link right?

I was actually thinking about buying these.
I ran into a guy with this awsome looking toyota baja truck with the 2 rack spare tires and other kool stuff. He was at a home depot showing it off. I guess he races, it had depot stickers all over it. ANY WAY, I was asking him about the open country At's . He was telling me they are a great tire for off road and sandy situations. Also not bad highway either. They were kind of a heavy tire that he had, but it was a 276/something/20's
He showed me pictures of him going into a man made mud pit, stop, then take off and get out of the pit with out getting stuck. He said they are sick tires to have for any off roading type.
I would say that would be a heavy tire.

I liked the way they looked on the truck he had.

I currently run P-metrics AT's. They have held up just fine on the trails of SoCal and Moab. I usually only air down to 20 psi and watch where I put the side walls. Originally picked them over the LT's due to weight. 50 lbs of unsprung weight add up on a 100 mile daily commute. Now that I'm at a 6 mile daily trip my next set will be a set of LT mudders.

Yeah I actually love these tires, but I was just worried about the sidewalls on anything rocky. They are very light compared to the BFGs, or Grabbers, and since my car is more daily driver/adventure vehicle then a hardcore offroader they suit me fine I think. I just wanted to see what you guys thought about those sidewalls though, hear about any bad experiences with them.

I had a set of LT235-75-15's on my recently traded in XJ. They worked great on road here in the wet Pacific Northwest and also great in dunes and snow. I paid extra to have each tire siped, which really helped with the wet road traction.

As long as you have a FULL SIZE MATCHING spare you will be fine
I ran all over the place with some cheepo 30 X 9.5 mudders
places like Tellico ,Gilmer and Hot Springs just to mention a few
I got only 2 side wall punctures
They were a C load tire rated just under 2K lbs per tire at 50 psi
Thing is I paid right at $75 each including M&B which I would think is 1/2 of what you paid
Now that I am running bias ply swampers I can rub on stuff that would other wise rip the side wall right out of most tires
and not even flinch

Also know that these are AT's and no matter what any one tells you they WILL NOT be as good as the cheepest MT's off road
You are in VA and if the trails there are like the ones I ran in Tellico then I would simply say
Get a good jack and a good lug wrench
