This applies to center caps off of 02-04 KJ's only!!! These are held on by three screws in back of the cap! 05+ Caps were held on by the lug nuts, and is a simple matter of pulling the lugs off and swapping the caps.

To go from this:
Image
to this:
Image

Here's what ya need...
Set of factory center caps from a set of 16" steel rims
Set of Cragars
5/16" socket
Drill
1/8" Bit
1/4" Bit
Scissors/Knife
Snips
Cardboard/heavy paper for template
Pen
Tape
Beer

1.) Open the beer, your about to drill holes into those perfectly good, pretty Soft 8's. I justified as a being used to "steady the nerves" so I didn't miss drill.
2.) Grab the new (old) center caps, start by cutting off the two tabs on the rear of each so that they sit below the plane and wont touch the wheel when mounted.
Image
Image
Image
3.) use a piece of cardboard, or cardstock and trace an outline of the center cap with at least 2-3 holes marked also. You will also be able to feel the mounting holes for the three screws though the cardboard, mark these. Cut the template, and holes, and use your 1/8" drill bit to poke a hole for the mounting screws. Once your done, tape it down to the wheel, using the lug holes to align the template.
Image
4.) Another drink of beer, hold breath, and drill the first pilot hole with the 1/8" bit. This was the hardest part... Holes 2-15 become increasingly easier! Drill out the pilot holes with an 1/4" bit now.
Image
5.) Mount the cap to the outside of the rim, start by threading the first screw just a bit to get to grab, followed by the 2nd and 3rd. Snug up with a 5/16" socket/wrench when all three are started. The 1/4 holes should leave enough play in lining up the screws to correct for any little bit you are off with on the template.
Image
6.) Knock out the last 4 rims, and walla! Remount and enjoy the goodness in the world that results from completing a cheap, easy project that very, very few will ever notice. :D

Thought about painting them gloss black to match the Cragars. But for the moment I'm digging the contrast of the argent on black.

Going to do the 'Daspes Center cap mod'.

Picked up some center caps

and decided to make the 'JEEP' stand out a little more

Used some touch up paint that matched my KJ

Hopefully they will be on tomorrow!

Thanks Tom, I know I talked to you last week and thought they'd be on then, but Life continues to happen around here and gets in the way of playing. But so far so good for tomorrow!

They are the generic center cap that came on all the 16" steel wheels. You can find them all over the place relatively cheaply.

I got mine on eBay, like $10 for the set of four. Depends if you can catch a private seller (cheap, just wants to get rid of them) vs. a used parts dealer (expensive, just wants to stupid rape you).

Deals can be found.

Man, what a pain in the rear I had putting mine on! Although my problems were the result of a hasilty made template and a complete and utter lack of patience.

That silver hubcap on the black rim looks awesome! I've been contemplating putting my "old" AT KOs on Cragars for every day use and keeping the Goodyears for off-road. This mod is another good to do it! Looks cool!

Thanks for the great write up, seems well thought out. Gonna print this one out.

This looks great with the soft 8s. I have some questions.

I bought a set of caps off Ebay. They were listed as fitting a 16" Wrangler rim for years 07-10. I thought the Liberty and Wrangler rims were both 5x4.5. I was wrong. After getting the caps, it appears that the ones I bought were for a rim with a 5x5 bolt pattern.

Do I need a set specifically for the Liberty? Did they change the Liberty bolt pattern sometime during it's model run? I'd really like to use a late model set with the pins and avoid drilling the holes.

07-10 Wranglers went to a different bolt pattern.

I went with the older style caps. The are bolted to the rim exactly like the newer style cap.
Image

when I pulled my front tires to install my UCAs, I found these circular marks on the rotors.
Image

By the looks of it, the bolts that hold the cap in place stick up over the part of the rim that is suppose to sit flush with the rotor. That's probably not a good idea.

To fix this I counter sunk the holes and replaced the bolts with 10x3/4 wood screws.
Image

By the looks of the pictures you posted above, you might want to check and see if yours are sitting the same as mine were.
