so i decided to paint my stock wheels from the 03 sport and i took off the spare to test it first and washed it, sanded it with 320 grit and then sprayed it with duplicolor wheell paint and then this clear coat stuff from dupli color it looked good until about 24 hours later when it was coming off in sheets! is there something i did wrong or missed a step, is there a better product on here someone else has used? thanks again! |

if you sanded it right and cleaned it good after sanding it should of stuck good, did you let it get tacky in between coats? |

hmm it seemed fine will i was painting but i could definetly of sanded it more ill try it again on the spare, couldnt hurt |

I used Duplicolor wheel paint on some Rubicon wheels i got cheap. They had been painted black when i got them. the only thing i did was clean them and dry them good. I was real short on time a family thing that night. But the wheels turned out great. its only been two weeks if that so maybe they will start to go. I would just sand them and clean off well and let them dry good it should work.

you must clean the wheel first with a degreaser. then begin to sand it, you really dont need 320 grit. i would use 600 grit, or even a 3M red scuff pad. once the wheel is totally sanded then clean it once again with a degreaser. make sure whatever you clean it with has no and i repeat NO SILICONE. primer the wheel with a paint that works with Duplicolor paint. lightly coat it with primer, let dry and then begin to spray with the color holding the can about 8-12" away. make as many coats as necessary, but make NO RUNS. repeat this process 4 times after you do the spare. |

ZACK-- the higher the grit, the finner the sand paper. but you def want to use 600 grit due to the fact that when using a lower # grit, you will get some rough sanding scratches when painting the wheels |

Forget the duplicolor clear coat. It is crap. I used it at first on mine and it looked awful. Go to walmart and buy a few cans on rustoleum crystal clear coat, it holds up much better and looks 10000x's better. I painted my wheels with duplicolor and rusto and they are holding up great, even through the mud and the salt air enviroment down here. Also follow the insructions given above and the ones on the can. Start your spray off the wheel move on to wheel and do not release until off wheel, to prevent runs and spots. also apply it in several light coats, if you make mistakes its easier to cover up if its a lighter coat. |

For those who have painted their wheels. How is the paint holding up if you live in an area where salt is used to melt the snow/ice? |

I just got some Moabs but want to paint them black. They also have tires on them so I'm going to have to wrap the tires to paint. Going to be a bit of a job. Also, should I put down a layer of black primer first? |

I painted mine in Spring 2009 and they have been holding up just great. You have to make sure you use the right stuff. I used Eastwood paint. I used three cans of: paint adhesion promoter satin black wheel paint clear coat Two coats of black and three coats of clear. |

I used Duplicolor high heat engine paint on mine so i could get semi satin black. the spare i put Duplicolor wheel clear coat over and it made it look horrible. So everything is now just painted with the engine paint. looks great. driven in snow, sand, mud, etc...no issues at all. |

I was looking for both heat and grime protection when painting my old wheels so I ended up using caliper paint. Held up great, never had any fading or problems.  Just spend HOURS of proper prep work and only 20 minutes of painting. |
