Which tire will clean itself better in mud?

Will the Yokohama Geolandar AT-II or the General Grabber AT-2 clean itself better in mud?

They are both ATs, so basically both will be mediocre at self cleaning. Any difference is probably negligible.

Yeah I know but the ATs come in more sizes so I want to find the one that will clean itself the best. If anyone has any thoughts they would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try looking at the Cooper S/T's, they have a self cleaning tread design.

If you want the self cleaning you need MUD tires. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. You can have the best designed all terrain in the world but it will still never self clean as well as a cheap mud terrain. A/T's turn to slicks in mud and snow. The BF Goodrich All Terrain seems to be best in snow and mud but it isn't as good as a mud terrain in mud or deep snow. This goes back to my comprimises rant. Do you want a weekend warrior or a trail boss? A show queen or a mud monster? Pick one and quit complaining.

I have those, and self-cleaning they are NOT. they don't grab too bad, though.

If you're worried about self-cleaning, you shouldn't look into all-terrain tires at all. They call them mud-terrains for a reason :lol:

I must admit I'm not sure how to take the comment "pick one and quit complaining". How does that apply to this thread at all??

I've never complained for one second. I simply asked a question...which AT would clean itself BETTER? Should have a straightforward answer. But I guess not. :roll:

Basically, because they are both ATs, neither will likely clean well in mud, and the difference in their self-cleaning will probably be negligible if existant. This is typical of all ATs. They can clean themselves with some high-revving, like any tire, but they'll never do what an M/T was meant to do.

I run BFG AT KOs on my YJ and when the goo gets real deep and thick.. They turn into glazed donuts..

I agree with him.

He never asked for info about Mud Terrains. He asked which of these two tires does the best. If you don't know, don't bring up Mud Tires and say he should get Muds.

Apparently, he has narrowed his decision down to two tires (Geolanders and Grabbers) and needs to know which of these two does better.

probably get bashed for this but any at will suck in the mud. my big-o a/t suck hard as do my BFG KO's. They just don't clean off. So I gotta tell you it's going to be sixes.

Gotta get a M/T if you plan on doing mud, they will clean off well with the bigger gaps....ok, bash. :oops:

Skyjump, krazzle, and myself are all saying the same basic thing. Looking at AT tires from a perspective of self-cleaning in mud, the difference in any two AT tires will be negligible; it will most likely turn into a "donut".

If you're worried at all about self-cleaning, that must mean you plan on hitting the mud, no? If you want maximum traction in this situation you're going to beg to have M/Ts over an all-terrain tire. I hit more mud than anything offroad, so I run mud-terrains. For what they do in the goo, I couldn't be happier with my tire selection.

10-4. Well yeah that's true...we don't have any of the extreme rock crawling trails here. No Rubicons and such around here. Basically our trails are hilly and muddy. So yeah I will be hitting the mud quite a bit while off-road.

The only thing is I do spend the majority of my time on the road. So that is why I was considering goiong with an AT tire. But considering everything I guess I'm going to start looking at MTs again. That might be the best bet for me.

if you have the money, get a cheap highway tire mounted on your stock wheels, then get a decent mud tire mounted on a set of steel wheels. No compromises, self cleaning, no problems. If you can't afford it, get the Cooper Discoverers (i have seen what they do on other vehicles and i want them). Sorry bud if i offended you but an AT (and i have mine and love em) will never be as good as mud terrain in mud. I use my AT more in snow and ice where they work best. In mud-I hit the hole a little faster and a little harder (get yer mind outta da gutter). Keep your momentum up and you wont get stuck. Remember the cardinal rule of 4 wheeling: as slow as possible, as fast as nessecary.

I had a nice long chat with the alignment guy at the Firestone store I bought my tires from and he said that he's a jeeper, too. Also said that he has a bud with the Destination M/Ts on his CJ7, and they lasted him as long as BFG A/T KOs. Needless to say, I'm expecting a lot of mileage of out these tires, for a mud-terrain anyways. TireRack has good reviews for their wear from many people. Most of my driving it on the street, too.

Just go for a good set of M/Ts. I'm not necessarily saying get the Firestone's, but if you're on the street a lot you need to worry about tread wear. Of course, it won't mean a thing if you don't rotate your tires.

Here's the the TireRack survey for Maximum Traction tires. It has most of the M/T's you'll consider. Don't even both looking at Mickey Thompson tires or Super Swampers, they all have bad wear with a lot street driving (these brands aren't offered on TireRack). Take a look at where whatever tire you're considering stands in this survey.

There is a lesson to be learned here, if you dont go with the crowd, dont ask the question (or for an opinion).

I have to agree with the above, I think it was a general question about the two AT's and how they self clean (not necessarily in mud but in general). no need for a big debate over AT/MT.

Good call on the Coopers, I bought some as well even though a majority of people didnt like them or didnt use them and I am very happy with them (plug-plug) on and off road and snow as well.
